CHAPTER 20

The island had risen to the height of a full-grown man by the time we were back. It brought a wicked smile to my face. Enough mana was being absorbed by the control crystal that it could now at least float. If we managed to open up a second well, then it would be able to stay afloat just by absorbing the mana from the mystical realm.

“What is going on with the palace?” Ceres asked as we approached the Sect. Anyone but Tairon had no idea that this would happen any time soon, so I appreciated their surprised expressions.

“It has started. We need to hurry up, love. The island is steadily rising.”

Khepri rose as his legs folded outward, expanding by two more joints. He was now standing at his full height, towering above anyone present. Tairon and Mantis looked like children from where we stood atop his back. Even Jagaar didn’t look that impressive from above, but they could still beat me. Well, Mantis couldn’t, but that was beside the point.

I gathered mana in my voice and shouted so the Sect would hear me; otherwise, they might run off after seeing Khepri.

“Everyone! We are back! Gather at the training grounds!”

Most of the work and people busying themselves with whatever died down then, and people turned toward our direction. Many of their faces mirrored those of my girls when they first saw our new allies, but some seemed curious, others even excited.

Mua rushed out of the inn with several others in tow. I recognized Rifat, our architect, Sidan, our Master Carpenter, and Asnee, the Master Smith. Aside from them, the same small group consisted of several other people. Zuka Jakai and Loan Zhen from the mine were there, too, and so were Torek and Zafir. I had no idea why they were all together, but I’d ask later.

“Sect Master,” Mua called from where he stood some thirty steps away. “Welcome back, and I see you have brought along new...allies.”

“Allies, yes,” I shot back and put my hand on Khepri’s head. “Go on, but don’t step on anyone. See that large area over there with the stands? Go there. Brahma, you and the Oni join us too. I need to introduce you to the Sect so people don’t lose their minds.”

“I’m going to rest for a while. My balls are itching and Alejna has been ho—” Mantis started but shut up as his woman slapped his shoulder.

“Hey!” Alejna hissed. “Not everyone needs to know, you brute! Get going, will you?”

He shot me an apologetic look and I just shook my head in amusement.

“Leave the horses in the stable and go. Tairon, you and Anela can rest, too. Fazan and Theria. Go. Everyone already knows you.”

Our physician and his partner shook their heads.

“No, we will join you,” he said, looking as fresh as when we set off. “I like to be around when you speak. It instills...a sense of security in me.”

“That’s what a good Sect Master does,” Tairon mused. “Who knew they’d look up to you so much, old friend?”

I smiled with a shrug.
