Coal Valley, VA

Dear Gaines,

It finally snowed today. It’s been so cold you couldn’t put your nose out the door without freezing it off, but we haven’t had any snow. For the longest time, I set in the kitchen with Sassy on my lap so we could watch it snow. We just set and listened to the radio and watched it snow. Every time “White Christmas” played I ached for you and all the soldiers who are missing Christmas with their loved ones.

I couldn’t take my eyes off of Coal Valley covered in snow. Even if it’ll just last for a few hours, it’s nice to see everything clean and white. I wish you could’ve seen it. It was the most beautiful right at the edge of dark. I could see the lights shining through the windows of the Methodist church. It was so beautiful it took my breath away. I said a prayer for you and all the men over there fighting to keep the world safe for all of us.

Madge came over yesterday with a little pine tree we put in the front room. We strung lights and put decorations on it that my Mama had made with her own two hands. I remember how every Christmas she’d crochet little angels, stars, bells, and trees, with fine white thread, then starch them until they were stiff and hang them on the tree. Lord that made me so homesick for her and Daddy. Sassy loves to look at the lights! She fell asleep in my arms watching them. I put the baby doll you wanted me to get under the tree with a tag that says “to Sassy from Daddy.”

I worked for Madge two days last week. I got Loretta Wilson to come to the apartment and keep Sassy. She and Sassy took right to each other. I know that you told me to go back to work if I wanted to, but it was hard to leave Sassy. Madge said I could work a day or two a week or as much as I felt like. I’m going to work tomorrow and half a day on Christmas Eve to help Madge get out of there early.

Me and Sassy are going to spend Christmas with Madge at her Mommy’s so don’t worry about us being by ourselves on Christmas. I know your love will be with us, just as I am sending mine and Sassy’s to you. Gaines, take care of yourself. I pray every night for your safe return. I love you with all my heart and will be waiting here for you when you come back.

Love,

Sylvia
