CHAPTER SEVEN

KAMAR

“You’re going viral, man.” Conner held up his cell phone to Kamar, the screen illuminated with a TikTok video set to Jaws-themed music.

Kamar felt a flicker of excitement—had someone recorded one of his performances? He took the phone from Conner, looking closer at the video. Definitely not a performance. What the hell? It was footage of him falling into the dunk tank during the Independence Games, but then someone had added an animated shark to the water that was then pretending to attack and eat him.

The dunk tank turned red with animated blood and then the screen went black except for the words: R.I.P. TO THE MAN WHO STOLE MY GIRL.

“What the hell?” Kamar frowned and looked up at Conner. “This is…this is creepy. Is this a threat or something?”

Conner shrugged. “It was posted by someone named @winteriscoming69 last night and already has over fifty thousand views. People think the animation work is funny and the topic relatable, apparently. They’re calling it a Skeet-video rip off, like Kanye did against his ex-wife’s new man. The top comment just says ‘Rest in Pieces.’ The one under that is ‘Savage!’ Who did you piss off, guy?”

He knew the answer to that immediately, even though it still didn’t make any sense.

“Are you headed to the fireworks?” Kamar asked Conner instead.

Conner shook his head. “I’ve got to be up early tomorrow. You have fun though! I saw you hobnobbing it with Summer. You should definitely make your move. She’s a wonderful girl!”

“You never made your move?” he asked, one brow raised.

Conner laughed. “She’s got too many boobs and not enough dick to be my type.”

Kamar laughed, because he could kind of see that now that Conner had outed himself. “Okay, okay. I read you loud and clear.”

“But, hey, if you are working tomorrow, stop by and grab a cheese sammy on me!” Conner headed off down the mall corridor, leaving Kamar sitting on the bench in front of Lord of the Rinse Dry Cleaners.

“You ready?”

He turned to see Summer walking up to him, and she was holding out a large churro wrapped in parchment paper.

She smiled. “I grabbed us some churros for the show.”

“That looks delicious,” he replied, taking one from her and chomping off one large bite. After their conversation last night in the bar, he’d asked her to watch the fireworks with him tonight. The mall parking lot was the best vantage point to view them, and so he had seen that people were beginning to camp out a spot in the early afternoon. He hoped they’d still be able to find a good spot, even though they’d waited until the end of the shift. “Hey, uh…I feel like I should tell you something.”

Summer’s brow furrowed as she looked sideways at him, her churro half sticking out of her mouth. “Uh oh.”

“It’s not bad,” he assured her, but then paused. “Well, I mean…I don’t know what it is. It’s just weird. Here, let me show you.”

He pulled up the video on his phone that Conner had texted him and turned the screen toward Summer.
