The twins and I spent the rest of the afternoon catching up on everything we’d missed. I told them about being held hostage in my father’s house with no way of reaching the outside world, my awakening ceremony, and everything after, including Phillipa, and the quickie with Gian.

They were both very concerned when they couldn’t get a hold of me earlier in the week. Still, their parents and brother assured them that I was alive and well, despite being miserable. Then they told me about their own awakening ceremonies. Lyla went first and got the water element, then Iris got the earth element. That was late last night, and this morning at breakfast, their parents informed them that the three of us would be together again since our elements matched—my air and fire with Lyla’s water and Iris’ earth.

We made a kindred, and everyone was relieved that at least one thing about my situation was easy to solve; everyone, except my father and aunt, that is. Apparently, they fought against letting me join a kindred but were overruled. Father told them I was dangerous, unfit to serve as a Whitethorn, and I shouldn’t be given the same dignity as the rest of them. I should have been stripped of my magic and locked away before I did any more damage to the Society.

I wish I could say that hearing that didn’t hurt, but it did. It hurt a lot. Like I said, I only got one father, and mine hated me to the core. I didn’t understand how he could feel that way about me, even as a kid. No matter what excuse I could think up, none of them stuck. Not a one. No parent should hate their child.

Lyla ended up making lunch in our new open concept kitchen/living room while Iris showed me around the cabin. After seeing it all, I decided that cabin wasn’t the right word to describe it, although I couldn’t think of anything else that fit it either. Other than the wood on the walls, floors, and ceilings, and an enormous fireplace in the living room, there was nothing about the structure that screamed ‘cabin in the woods’.

Large glass window panes made up a good portion of the outer walls, including in the bedrooms and bathrooms. Yes, even the bathrooms. Technology was wired throughout the house, from smart lights to automatic door locks. The ‘cabin’ also included a home gym and a theater inside and a large infinity pool and basketball court outside.

There were four bedrooms with attached bathrooms (for the standard four people in a kindred). One on the main floor and three on the top floor. The twins opted to give me the room on the main floor because of Donovan. They thought he would have a hard time navigating the stairs. I had a feeling they underestimated my clever bunny a little too much.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that it could have been Donovan that I felt comforting me as I fell asleep those nights at my father’s house.
