PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR THE ARRIVAL OF A NEW BABY

Talk with your child about the new baby as much as possible. We showed our sons the nursery, the crib, the tiny clothes that waited in the drawers.

Read books together about it. We liked The Berenstain Bear’s New Baby by Stan and Jan Berenstain, Baby’s First Year by Debbie MacKinnon, 101 Things to Do with a Baby by Jan Omerod, and Baby’s Book of the Body by Roger Priddy.

Make a book for your child about the new baby. I made a crisis storybook for both of my boys, so that they could more concretely imagine themselves with the baby. I faked new baby pictures by using photos of baby Max, which I then cut and pasted in with shots of Max and Nat so that it would look like Max and Nat with a new baby. The book told them things like, “The new baby will cry a lot,” and “Grandma will be staying with us to help. You can help, too.” It also told them that Mommy and Daddy still loved them even though they also loved the new baby.

Offer your child chances to practice being around a new baby. We bought our boys a lifelike baby doll to familiarize them with the concept of handling a baby safely.

If possible, have your child attend a “siblings class” like those offered by many hospitals to prepare children for the arrival of a new baby. We took our sons to a siblings class at the hospital where I would be giving birth. The class included a tour of the newborn nursery. Seeing the tiny babies and the physical location of the maternity wing helped give Nat an idea of what was to come.
