Mackie glanced around but Tandy remained invisible. “I was thinking the same thing about the papers,” she murmured. “I won’t let Chris get at them.”

Or the flash drive, either, because what’s all that encrypted stuff on there?

Chris couldn’t know that it was Hank who had told Mackie about the find, but it was an easy inference to make. Suddenly she went cold. Was it possible that she’d inadvertently put Hank Cullen in harm’s way.

I’d better warn him about Chris.

She dialed Hank’s number, but the call went to voicemail.

Rats. “Hi, Hank—look, can you call me when you get this? I think Chris Droller may be on to you. Um, I don’t even know if that means anything, but I wanted you to know. Okay, bye.”

She ended the call, but could not shake her unease. To distract herself she opened the photograph of Chris and Steve with the oddly familiar-looking man between them.

Who is that guy?

“Saul Kurtzman,” she muttered. “Saul Kurtzman.”

It was no use. She could not remember who he was.

Feeling restless, she decided to take a walk around the trails at Lake Galena.

The day was colder than she liked so she didn’t venture very far along the trail, turning back after less than half a mile, unable to warm up even though she walked briskly. She tried calling Hank, but again there was no answer.

Her uneasiness intensified. Something was wrong. Mackie was learning to trust her feelings. She hurried to her car and drove home.

But the closer she got to it, the more nervous she felt.

What the heck is going on with me? she wondered.

An oppressive feeling that some terrible thing was about to happen enveloped her. It grew worse until, by the time she pulled into her garage, she felt about ready to jump out of her skin.

Am I having an anxiety attack?

In her kitchen, Mackie put her purse on the table, shucked off her winter coat, and put on the kettle for tea. Her hands were shaking and she felt oddly light-headed. Maybe I’m coming down with the flu or something, she said to herself.

Without warning, she heard Tandy shout, Get down so loudly inside her head that Mackie gasped and dropped to the floor.

She heard a sharp noise and breaking glass.

Roll!

Mackie rolled over and over until she was up against the kitchen door. There was another loud noise—a shot, she realized.

Something smacked into the floor where she’d just been.

A bullet! Someone’s shooting at me!

From her current position, she was out of view from anyone at the back window. Mackie heard running footsteps. Someone was retreating. She knew she should get to her feet so that she could catch a glimpse of her assailant, but she could not force herself to move. Her breathing slowed gradually until she felt able to sit up and take stock.

Someone just tried to kill me.

Then she remembered Hank Cullen. Was he in danger? Was someone targeting both of them? Her hands were still shaking as she retrieved her phone from her purse and tapped out his number.
