Chapter 19 Betrayal
Cain had been gone for three weeks when Veronika was summoned into Osmundus’s presence. She was hesitant to obey the command, but she could not refuse and so she went to him despite her misgivings. When she arrived at the entrance to her master’s chambers, the doors that marked the threshold of his abode opened of their own accord, making it clear she was expected. She entered with her mind alert for any danger, but once within the bounds of the sorcerer’s chambers, a sudden sensation of warmth enveloped her, removing all fear.
Osmundus invoked the power of the mindthrall binding her mind to his, his will reaching out to take away her capability to make decisions, her sense of where and who she was. A stupor descended upon her that obscured all perception of reality, and when he led her to his bed, she went willingly.
With a lust that never waned throughout the night, Osmundus had his fill of her. He left no part of her flesh untouched or untainted. He revelled in the scent of her body as she clung to him, her tears wet upon his chest as he violated her. The act was made sweeter with the knowledge that she belonged to another, and his influence over her mind ensured that there could be no repercussions. She would remember nothing.
Eventually he tired, and so placed her exhausted, limp body on his work table amidst the tools of his varied research. A wave of his hand put her to sleep and he went to his bed alone, his appetite for fornication quenched for the moment.
He slept for hours, his bearded face pressed against the lush linen of his bed as he dreamt of dominion. His chambers were still, with only the sounds of the wind outside and the crackling of the fire in its hearth. The calmness was broken in the early hours before dawn as the seal of the Sorceress Dominica became apparent on Veronika’s forehead, outlined in seething, red light. The seal’s radiance faded from view as Veronika’s head jerked upwards, her neck twisting at an awkward angle. The movement was disturbing in its almost mechanical nature, and the lack of expression on her face as her unblinking eyes scanned her surroundings created an air of sinister intent.
Veronika’s form rose from the table on which she laid, her legs shaking at first, but then becoming steady as she gained more control. After donning her cast-off clothes, she crept about the sorcerer’s chambers, moving with the silent skill of a trained assassin. At one point she paused before the sleeping form of Osmundus, studying his body with a calm intensity that gave the impression of deep thought.
She crossed to a rack of weapons hanging on the wall and caressed the blade of a long dagger, its metal gleaming in the light of the fire from the hearth. There was a moment when her face expressed such raw malice that it seemed utterly alien to her features, like a mask of someone else’s face overlaid on hers.
