Chapter Thirteen
Goldie was quiet as the scenery moved past her window.
âShe wasnât even upset that the man was dead,â Zeb muttered not for the first time.
âBut where was she?â Goldie murmured.
âWhatâs that?â Zeb slowed to take a turn.
âBonnie claims that she doesnât know where LeGrand went after they argued,â Goldie reminded him. âBut where did Bonnie go after they argued? LeGrand was killed in his apartment.â
âYou heard her. She claims she went home.â
âAnd you believed her?â Goldie asked skeptically.
âItâs not my job to believe her,â he replied. âIâll have to confirm what she said.â
âHow will you do that?â She answered her own question. âYouâll speak with her family and neighbors.â
âIf no one can verify what she said, Bonnie Bender remains a prime suspect.â He slanted a curious look at her. âWhy do you ask?â
âIâm just trying to understand your technique,â she admitted.
âMy technique, as you call it, is good old-fashioned police work.â He went silent for a moment. âDo you think sheâs guilty of murder?â
âShe seemed more concerned about recovering her mad money purse than about what happened to LeGrand.â
âShe could be a killer who happens to like fashion,â he pointed out.
âYouâll also check with people who live near LeGrandâs apartment?â Goldie asked. âTo see if anyone matching Bonnieâs description has ever visited or perhaps was there on the night he was killed?â
âNo one has claimed to see anyone near LeGrandâs apartment the night he was killed. Why do you ask?â
âI was just thinking that LeGrand spent a great deal of time at the hotel during the construction,â she explained. âItâs possible that someone there knows something useful.â
âPolicemen have already been sent to the hotel to speak with the employees.â
âThe hotel has a restaurant,â she said temptingly. âWeâll have to eat sometime.â
âOr I could drop you off at your office and you could answer letters addressed to Mrs. Doyenne.â
âIâve been helpful,â she argued with confidence. âI managed to find Bonnie Bender with nothing more than obscure hints regarding a snood and a womenâs purse. I might be useful when you speak with the hotel staff.â
His sigh of admission brought a smile of contentment to her face. She was still smiling when they entered the lobby.
âThe front desk clerk is busy,â he said in her ear.
âJasper Gains,â she supplied as she watched the man in question respond to a hotel guest at the desk. âI was thinking we might begin with the cleaning ladies.â
âTheyâre a lot like servants,â he said in agreement. âPeople tend to treat them like furniture.â
Goldie spotted a familiar face down the hall. âThere is Millie.â
âYou know the staff by name?â
She didnât take the time to respond. Her heels tapped across the tiled floor as she moved quickly to catch up with the uniformed woman pushing a cart laden with cleaning supplies. She was about to call out Millieâs name when she noticed a stack on the cart begin to wobble.
âWait!â Goldie darted forward just in time to stop the pile of neatly folded towels from toppling over. âI got them.
