CHAPTER 7

“Good evening, Police emergency hotline. How can I help you?”

“I want to report some trouble, please. My husband and I are driving to Calicut and we just passed the turnoff to the Urumi dam. We had stopped to stretch our legs and we heard several loud explosions. Sounded like bombs. It was very scary.”

“What is your name, Madam?” asked the operator on the phone.

Myla hung up without saying anything more.

“Why did you do that?” Imran asked. “It will only call attention to what happened there.”

“There was an innocent back there.” Looking at Imran, she added, “Not your buddies, though. They are all dead.”

Imran shot Myla a quick glance and asked, “Who are you, Agent Myla? Why is the underworld trying so hard to kill you?”

“Underworld? What underworld?”

Looking surprised, Imran looked at her and said, “Don’t you know? These guys all work for the Don in Chennai. Parthasarathy Mudaliar. He controls all the criminal activity here.”

Myla just sat back in her seat looking like she had been slapped. “Damn. Now there is an underworld element to all this,” she thought to herself.

“Why on earth would the underworld be coming after me?” Myla asked aloud. “Why would they take a contract on me? I am a nobody. They are only interested in power and money. I have neither.”

Keeping a stoic face, Imran said, “I have to be truthful with you. I was not a part of the group that killed your family, but I am not innocent either. I have done things, bad things, during my time working for the various gangs controlled by Parthasarathy Mudaliar. But I did not have anything to do with what happened to your family. I promise you that.”

“Please call me Myla. And I believe you, Imran. I saw your face when you reached the dam. If you were faking the emotions around the killing of your cousin, you are the best goddamn actor in the world.”

Taken aback, Imran said, “Thank you. Aftab was a good boy. Hard-working. Honest. Everything I am not. His family depended on him for their livelihood. I don’t know what will happen to them now.”

Shaking her head sadly, Myla said, “The leader back there, his ID said Aman Mathur. He shot my friend like he was swatting a mosquito. So casual. So unaffected. No respect for life.”

Looking shocked, Imran asked, “Aman killed Kichu, is it?”

Seeing Myla nod, Imran continued talking. “He is one of the senior gang-members from Chennai. An enforcer. He is one of the meanest and toughest people in the organization. He reports directly to Partha. He is a complete maniac. I think he is the one who killed Aftab too.”

With a smile, Myla said, “That’s one maniac that will never hurt anyone again.”

Imran’s eyes widened a little, but he chose to remain silent and continue driving.

“You need to know something, Imran. We are heading to Chennai because I intend to destroy everything that your organization has over there. I am going to find and kill this Parthasarathy fellow.
