FLOORED

Another stormy day. Another day for the Crew to meet in the gym. It was hard being inside because, for a change, Elzbeth wasn’t the only one waiting anxiously for something to happen. Over the weekend Joe had sat with his eyes glued to the computer screen in his room, watching the little blip that was Snookums on one window and analyzing the information grid they had created on another. He told the Crew he was sure they’d missed something but he still didn’t know what.

The sounds of balls bouncing on the wooden floor mixed with echoing shouts of their classmates running about and playing games. Somewhere in the distant background, thunder rolled and rain pelted the high windows in the gym. Joe said this was ideal weather for thinking. “I brought a couple of new copies of the grid. They are in the pack on the left side of my chair. Elzbeth, will you get them?”

“I already looked at that chart,” she said, getting the pieces of paper and handing one to Trudy. She started folding her own copy into a paper airplane.

“Ruben, I emailed you a copy. You should have it when you get home,” Joe added. “In the meantime, Trudy can read you and Elzbeth some of the information. The answer is in here somewhere and we are just not seeing it.”

Trudy read the categories and connected them to each missing cat. Ruben tilted his head to the right as he always did when he wanted to store information in his brain. When Trudy had finished reciting the chart, Ruben demonstrated his remarkable memory. “So, if I understand it, kitty number three, Manxley, went to a home only three blocks away from where Snookums is? And, only one of Manxley’s adoptive parents works outside of home and the litter box was located in a hall closet?”

“How do you do that?” Elzbeth, who didn’t always remember her own address, asked.

“Do what?” was Ruben’s reply. It was not at all remarkable to him that he could remember nearly anything he wanted to. It was just the way he was.

Elzbeth was growing tired of all the analysis. While the others pondered the details on the chart, she decided to update her friends on Snookum’s life with the Murphys. “ Clarissa said she had bought a little perfumed blue satin pillow for him to sleep on. But instead, Snookums used it to sharpen his claws. And she had her husband build a kitty ramp all around the walls of their spare bedroom so the kitty will think he is climbing trees and stuff. She put wallpaper with little mice around the room and, get this, she put a little TV set in the room and leaves it on the Cartoon Channel so Snookums won’t be lonely while they are at work. Do you believe it?” The others didn’t react, which didn’t bother Elzbeth at all.

“To tell you the truth, I think Clarissa is going a little overboard,” she continued. “Like, she’s having the carpets cleaned so the kitty won’t be bothered by dust bugs or something.
