CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Heart Resort, North Carolina

Today’s affirmation: I will focus.

Despite the bright smile of Ava Wutuku, Leila’s executive assistant, on video chat, Beatrice could barely keep her own on her face.

She was exhausted, having worked late on her to-do lists for both Heart Resort and Beachy, and from her rough night of insomnia waiting for Jackson to text back.

Even now, she had to resist the temptation to ensure that her phone’s ringer was on and turned up, that she had reception. She was so consumed that she wasn’t tracking what Ava was saying.

Thank goodness for Kim, who was taking copious notes. Taking lead, actually.

From under the table, she felt a gentle nudge against her shoe, and Beatrice stirred to present.

Ava was speaking. “We’d love to schedule a video chat for Leila to meet you and the rest of your team in a few days.” She looked down at her iPad. “Leila relies heavily on her gut before she commits to events or projects, especially in this case, since this is a vulnerable situation.”

“Oh, of course.” Beatrice forced herself into the moment. “And we want to make sure she’s comfortable.”

“Great. I’ll get back to you on the date very soon.”

After a round of thanks, Beatrice shut her laptop screen and looked across to Kim. Eyes rounded, clearly overwhelmed. “This is. A lot,” she squeaked.

“My notes are a mess,” Beatrice said. “Thank you for nudging me back there. My mind is all over the place.”

“That’s what I’m here for. Are you . . . okay?”

“Yeah.” She offered her as sincere a smile as she could give and shook herself back to business. “It is a lot. But we have our systems in place. We’re doing more hand-holding because she’s Leila, but she’s coming to us because of exactly what we do. We’re great at this.”

“Right; you’re right.” Kim pressed her hands against her planner page. “Okay. We have a little more than five weeks—we can do this. On top of everything else.”

“Of course we can,” Beatrice affirmed, though judging by the way Kim was gripping her pen, there was more going on. Beatrice linked her fingers together. She understood it could be intimidating sitting across from a boss. “Kim? Is something else going on?”

She blew out a breath. “I’m getting married.”

Beatrice had a thing for the M- or the W-word. Marriage or wedding.

Oh, who was she kidding? She loved anything that involved a celebration, a reunion, or a party. In a second she was on her feet and rounding the tables, just in time for Kim to stand and receive her hug. “Oh my gosh. Congratulations. I’m sorry; I didn’t even ask if I could throw myself at you. And who are you marrying? And when? Sorry, is that too forward?”

“No, no it’s not.” Kim’s face softened. “I’m marrying my college sweetheart, Heath. He’s in Raleigh. We’ve been long distance since I started working here. All that to say, we planned to marry with the justice of the peace around the time of Leila’s stay.
