Off this room were a bathroom, a dressing-room and a small sitting-room.

It was the suite traditionally occupied by the master and mistress of the house.

Nell's grandfather had moved out of it when his wife had died and, by the looks of it, it had been empty ever since.

He tried to visualise himself sharing it with Nell and found, depressingly, that he could not. It was too late to turn back. He had promised her grandfather that he would look after her, and besides. His mouth compressing, he walked out of the room and closed the door.
