Chapter Twelve

Stefan followed Kirby out to the tree, lifted Louise when she couldn’t reach, and held her tight when she insisted on sitting on his shoulders. His sister only had the one child, a daughter he didn’t get to see much because of work. His career didn’t have many colleagues with kids; he had zero experience. However, this was natural. Louise clung to him and even giggled once or twice, and at one point he caught an approving smile from Andy, and that was high praise.

They couldn’t decorate any higher without a ladder, and that part could wait for him and Kirby to do without the children. It didn’t worry Louise, who was already dozing in his arms.

“We’ll have a nap,” Andy informed them. “I don’t usually, cos I’m seven, but I’ll cuddle Louise. Then we can do snowmen, and then, when it’s dark, we can do lights. Louise likes lights.”

Stefan waited for Kirby’s reaction, wanting to be led by him.

“Let’s get you upstairs, then,” Kirby said with a smile.

They trooped upstairs, and Louise was asleep as they put her down. Andy curled protectively at her side.

Kirby pressed a kiss to Andy’s forehead, then Louise’s, before they backed out of the room and shut the door behind them.

“He’s so grown-up for seven,” Stefan commented.

“He didn’t have the best start.” Kirby wrapped his arms around his chest protectively; his shoulders slumped just a little.

Stefan could see Kirby had the weight of it all on his shoulders. “How long will they sleep?”

“Couple of hours, maybe. I don’t know. It’s not like anything I’ve seen this last week has been normal.”

“Come with me, I want to show you something.” Stefan led Kirby down the hall to his bedroom and opened the door wide. “Somewhere to sit, where we can keep an eye out for the kids and talk at the same time.”

Kirby hesitated on the threshold. “Not sure how much I have to say.”

“We can just sit.”

Stefan’s bedroom had an area with a sofa and two chairs, and Kirby sat on the single chair nearest the window.

“This is a beautiful place,” Kirby murmured. He looked out of the window to the same view he would have in his own room: the gardens with their covering of snow.

“Beer?” Stefan crouched in front of his small fridge, pulling out two bottles and waiting for the yes or no.

“Please.” Kirby didn’t immediately drink, just rolled the bottle in his hands and stared at it.

“So you ended up going to your brother’s a week ago,” Stefan prompted.

“He’d hired this PI—not a nice guy, but good at his job.” Kirby smiled down at the bottle. “The PI gave me a letter, and it had these pictures in it, of Andy and Louise and one of Robbie. He hadn’t changed much from when I last saw him.” He looked up at Stefan as if he was waiting for the criticism that he’d never kept in touch. Stefan said nothing, just swallowed some more beer and waited.

Kirby continued. “The letter
