Chapter Twelve
Stefan followed Kirby out to the tree, lifted Louise when she couldnât reach, and held her tight when she insisted on sitting on his shoulders. His sister only had the one child, a daughter he didnât get to see much because of work. His career didnât have many colleagues with kids; he had zero experience. However, this was natural. Louise clung to him and even giggled once or twice, and at one point he caught an approving smile from Andy, and that was high praise.
They couldnât decorate any higher without a ladder, and that part could wait for him and Kirby to do without the children. It didnât worry Louise, who was already dozing in his arms.
âWeâll have a nap,â Andy informed them. âI donât usually, cos Iâm seven, but Iâll cuddle Louise. Then we can do snowmen, and then, when itâs dark, we can do lights. Louise likes lights.â
Stefan waited for Kirbyâs reaction, wanting to be led by him.
âLetâs get you upstairs, then,â Kirby said with a smile.
They trooped upstairs, and Louise was asleep as they put her down. Andy curled protectively at her side.
Kirby pressed a kiss to Andyâs forehead, then Louiseâs, before they backed out of the room and shut the door behind them.
âHeâs so grown-up for seven,â Stefan commented.
âHe didnât have the best start.â Kirby wrapped his arms around his chest protectively; his shoulders slumped just a little.
Stefan could see Kirby had the weight of it all on his shoulders. âHow long will they sleep?â
âCouple of hours, maybe. I donât know. Itâs not like anything Iâve seen this last week has been normal.â
âCome with me, I want to show you something.â Stefan led Kirby down the hall to his bedroom and opened the door wide. âSomewhere to sit, where we can keep an eye out for the kids and talk at the same time.â
Kirby hesitated on the threshold. âNot sure how much I have to say.â
âWe can just sit.â
Stefanâs bedroom had an area with a sofa and two chairs, and Kirby sat on the single chair nearest the window.
âThis is a beautiful place,â Kirby murmured. He looked out of the window to the same view he would have in his own room: the gardens with their covering of snow.
âBeer?â Stefan crouched in front of his small fridge, pulling out two bottles and waiting for the yes or no.
âPlease.â Kirby didnât immediately drink, just rolled the bottle in his hands and stared at it.
âSo you ended up going to your brotherâs a week ago,â Stefan prompted.
âHeâd hired this PIânot a nice guy, but good at his job.â Kirby smiled down at the bottle. âThe PI gave me a letter, and it had these pictures in it, of Andy and Louise and one of Robbie. He hadnât changed much from when I last saw him.â He looked up at Stefan as if he was waiting for the criticism that heâd never kept in touch. Stefan said nothing, just swallowed some more beer and waited.
Kirby continued. âThe letter
