Trouble

JIHUN

“Ten thousand missed calls, Nam Jihun.” Kyu’s words sounded like they were gritted through gnashing teeth.

“It couldn’t have been that many.”

“Nam Jihun.”

“I’m sorry. I was busy.”

“I see that.” Kyu’s voice came through his phone with an exasperated growl. “What were you thinking?”

“I wasn’t.”

Jihun surprised himself with his answer. He had planned. Everything in complete detail. He’d chosen where to go from his curated selection of secure, secret spots, and carefully so. He wanted a good day, as stretched out as he could manage, memorable and undisturbed. But past a certain point he decided to not give as much fucks as he usually would.

Wasn’t that what he should do about things beyond his control? Let live and let go.

There was a slight pause at Kyu’s end of the line. “Did you say you weren’t thinking?”

“I finally took your advice. Aren’t you proud of me, Kyu?”

“I could strangle you right now.”

Jihun sighed, raking his fingers down his face. “How bad is it?”

“As much as we could expect. Shock. Surprise. Rabid curiosity,” Kyu reported. Jihun could picture him in their agency’s office, huddled with the PR people, pacing the room where they handled things. “There are photos of you at the hotel’s ramen bar back in the Philippines. It’s all over SNS. That should be how people recognized her when they saw the two of you. The fans want to know who she is.”

Of course they did. It came with the triumphs of his job, this insatiable state of public interest. The dissolution of boundaries between reel life and real. It felt necessary and it didn’t usually bother him as much. His gym visits and meals out with friends were hardly remarkable. Except when he dwelled and thought about it and wondered why that had to be so.

But today when he saw Sol standing out there in the cold, rooted to the spot as phones snapped pictures of her face—it bothered him. Very much.

He tried to ease out a short laugh and unclench the fist he’d made of his hand. “It’s great how I’m shooting an action-horror film instead of a romantic comedy, isn’t it?”

“Sure, my friend, you have perfect timing. Considering you weren’t thinking.”

Jihun could see Kyu’s exhausted glare from Seoul to Gyeonggi. The image made him stifle a real laugh.

“Good thing there were more of us in that ramen place photo,” Kyu went on. “The photos from today are coming in but her face was half-covered and they only caught your profile. Could be worse. We’re going to say she’s only a friend, okay?”

The statement made a tick in his jaw move. He snuck a look back at Sol sitting not too far from him, not beyond hearing distance of this call.

“Run it by me before you release it,” he said to Kyu. “Please?”

“I understand.”

“I’m sorry for the trouble, Kyu.”

“Some would say it’s my job. I say it’s been a while since your last dating rumor, and this one has a non-celebrity twist.”

“Glad to keep you entertained, my friend.”

Kyu chuckled, finally. Jihun heard a door close from Kyu’s end, and in the background, silence.
