CHAPTER 11

“DID YOU LIKE MY GRANDPARENTS?”

A small, shy smile played at the corners of Mary Elizabeth’s mouth. It was a very tempting mouth. On the darkened sidewalk with the most beautiful woman on Earth walking next to him, was the perfect ending to a perfect day. Life couldn’t ever get any better.

Then she slipped her fingers into his and it did.

“Your grandmother has a great sense of humor. She had me going there for a while. I thought I was done for when she first mentioned the hair clasp. The two of you had a lot of fun leading me to believe I was in big trouble for not returning it before I did. She's a great actress because I really thought she was upset about me not returning it any sooner. If your grandfather hadn’t taken pity on me, I might still believe it.”

The moment became sweeter when she leaned her head on his arm. “He spoiled all the fun. Granddad could never stand to see anyone squirm. He is such a softy.”

He gave her hand a light squeeze. “Thank goodness. I had this little gray-headed woman all riled up and I thought I was going to have to buy a few more dozen chocolate-covered donuts and strawberry pies to make her happy. The pastry business has been booming since I arrived in town. The women in your family must have great metabolisms if you can eat so much and stay so tiny.”

She let out a contented sigh. “It could be that we hang out with guys who are always stealing our food, and we never get to eat.”

“I didn’t steal anything tonight. You should be proud. Maybe all of the time you’re spending with me is doing some good after all.”

“It might be that my dad made you so nervous you were afraid to steal anything. I bet if we go out again tomorrow, you’ll go right back to your old habits.”

They stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and turned to face each other.

“Come to lunch with me tomorrow and find out if I’m reformed or not.”

“Okay, but only because I’m interested in seeing if you’re going to steal my food or not. It isn’t because I think you’re rather handsome and charming.”

“You think I’m handsome and charming?”

She grinned and flipped her hair. “Did I really say that out loud? I must be getting some of your old habits and I’m talking to myself.”

He pulled her to him. “I don’t know if I care whether you were talking to me or to yourself. It all equals the same thing, as far I’m concerned. You still think I’m handsome and charming either way.”

She wrapped both hands behind his neck and pulled his face down to hers. “It does. Doesn’t it?”

He couldn’t resist the invitation, but before he had much time to pull her in for a kiss, rain drops splattered his head.

“If we walk really fast, we can finish this conversation in the gallery.”

She released him and they ran the last block to the square.
