That Monday morning Amy sat in her usual spot on the couch in Brooke's office, scrolling through various reports her employees had sent her. As the head of a consulting company, Amy couldn't only focus on her projects. She had to look into what everyone was doing, what conclusions they were drawing, and what recommendations they gave.

In over seven years of running her business, she'd only had to step in once when a junior consultant had made a poor judgment. That single experience cost Amy hundreds of thousands of dollars and a bad rap. The one thing business consulting could not afford was a damaged reputation.

A chime sounded from Amy's laptop, signaling a new email. She minimized the window she was working on and clicked on the icon in the corner, grinning when she saw Marlowe’s name as the sender.

Marlowe was Amy's first hire and had become her right hand. The two women spoke the same language, and it showed in how fast they'd grown the company. Marlowe had a knack for making projections, which was why Amy had asked her to look into Brooke's idea for a size inclusive line for teenagers.

Amy clicked on the email and quickly scanned through the opening remarks. She downloaded the spreadsheet and let her eyes skate over the less essential numbers down to the two she was looking for. Joy bubbled up in Amy as she realized Brooke's idea would make Bliss Designs a very profitable business.

“Hey Brooke,” Amy called out. “You got a second?”

Brooke sighed. “Sure. What’s up?”

The less than enthusiastic response made Amy's head snap up. Brooke's face was neutral, but there was tension around her mouth and dullness in her gray eyes. Something was off, but Amy couldn't put her finger on it.

Ever since Amy told Brooke she would have to leave soon, there was a shift in her girlfriend. When she and Brooke spoke, the younger woman asked mostly close-ended questions. Whenever they shared physical affection, it was Amy who initiated a lot of the contact. One could easily conclude that Brooke was pulling away, but it wasn't so simple.

That morning, Brooke had surprised Amy with breakfast in bed. Within minutes of completing their meal, they had made love. That had reassured Amy they were still on the same page, but here Brooke was, staring at Amy like she was an acquaintance.

"Are you sure you have time?" Amy asked, getting up. "This can wait."

“It's all right. We can chat. I’m going to have a lot on my plate over the next few days.”

“Because of the model casting?”

"Yeah. Most of our models are based in New York. Making sure dozens of outfits that cost thousands of dollars get there without any damage is quite the headache. On top of that, I can only take two tailors with me. We're deep into the spring season, so getting all the models in for fittings in the two days we plan on being there is a nightmare."

"If you need any help with that, I'm good at juggling several balls," Amy offered.
