* * * *

After leaving Bridget at her office, they took the scenic route back toward home. Neither of them was in any hurry. George had finally gotten himself into a vacation state of mind, and he liked it.

They rode in silence for a time, and George felt the importance of the silence they shared. They’d just told Bridget that they loved her. He had never said those words to a woman before, and he was pretty certain Gary hadn’t either. He wasn’t going to think of the future—not right then at any rate.

Gary stopped the car at a crossroad. He looked over at George, his expression thoughtful. “All the time we spent in Montana, neither of us ever thinking we’d ever leave. And until a few short weeks ago, neither of us ever had. And now…we got into the truck after kissing our woman goodbye and I said to you we’d take the scenic route home.” He shook his head. “It sure didn’t take me long to think of that place we’re staying at as home,” Gary said.

“I was just thinking the same thing. I guess you never think about how quickly and completely things can change, until they do.” His phone chirped. He didn’t have to wonder who was calling. He’d always had a habit of assigning a specific ring tone to each of his brothers.

“Hey, Lucas.”

“Hey, George. Is Gary with you?”

“He’s driving, and I’m riding shotgun. What’s up?”

“Could you put me on speaker, please?”

“Sure. Just give me a sec.”

He looked over at Gary as he pulled his cell phone away from his ear and activated the speaker.

George read the same confusion he was feeling in his cousin’s eyes. He shrugged, and Gary nodded.

“Hey, Lucas,” Gary said. “Is everything all right?”

“Yeah, we just thought if the two of you weren’t busy, you could stop by. We’re all gathered over at Jesse and Barry’s place and were just hanging out, and we figured you might like to join us.”

“Sure. That would be great, thanks. We’re not too far from there right now, in fact.”

“I’ll grab a couple of beers out of the fridge for y’all,” Barry called out. “So, step on it, cousins.”

George chuckled. “We’re on our way,” he said.

The one thing that his brothers and cousins who’d migrated south had in common was that, in a relatively short amount of time, they’d all made homes for themselves—literally—right here in Lusty, Texas.

They’ve all found their place here. George didn’t think anyone could argue about the level of their happiness, either.

“Any idea what’s up?” Gary asked.

“Not a clue. But I’m glad they want to spend time with us.”

“Me, too.”

Less than five minutes later, they pulled into the driveway, taking the right lane, toward the house. He let his gaze wander over toward the other enterprise these particular cousins were engaged in—the equine therapy establishment known as Healing Rides.

Then they rounded the bend and saw not only that very impressive house the guys had built for their wife, Shar, but all
