That night, Nolan and I made dinner at his place and opened a bottle of wine to share on the couch. But I was still raw from my session.
âHey, whatâs going on?â Nolan asked, setting down his glass. âTalk to me.â
I fiddled with the bottle label. âAt therapy today, we talked about my biological father.â
âYouâve told me he was a real bastard but not much more.â His gaze remained glued to mine, empathy blazing in his eyes.
âHe was cruel, and I was afraid of him as a kid. I was undiagnosed, so I was a handful.â My laugh was hollow. âYou know how I move around at night? Imagine that during the day.â
Nolanâs jaw ticked. âThatâs not your fault.â
âI know that now. Of course I do. I see myself in some of my students.â
âThatâs what makes you such a good teacher.â
My face heated, but I enjoyed the compliment. âThanks.â
âYour father sounds like a real asshole.â
I nodded. âI always loved gardening with my mom, and he made fun of me for it. I used to collect dandelions and make them into bouquets for my mother when I was really young. Mom said I was the darling of the neighborhood, helping control the weed populationâI thought they were flowers. I didnât know the difference.â
âFuck, Iâm sorry. I mean, my parentsâ marriage was a shitshow, but I knew my dad cared about me.â Nolan pulled me into his arms, and damn, I loved being held by him. I had about forty pounds on him, but it didnât matter because I felt completely enveloped by him. Iâd never had that before. I was always the big spoon.
I could totally get used to thisâ¦
âI can just imagine a tiny Ellis running around with a dandelion bouquet,â he said against my throat, and the deep timbre reverberated through my bones. âI wished Iâd known you back then. Or even in high school.â
âWhat would you have done?â I murmured.
Nolan removed his glasses, placed them on the table, then resumed his tight embrace. âIâd have supported your flower obsession and showed you mine with music. Obviously, you wouldâve related, especially in high school.â
âShow me yours, and Iâll show you mine?â
He laughed. âMaybe.â
The way he said it made me draw back to look at him.
Nolan said, âWhat if it would have helped us recognize stuff about ourselves back then?â
âI donât know.â I thought about it for a moment. âThings happen the way they do for a reason, right? Realizing this now when weâre more mature and set in lifeâ¦maybe that was how it was meant to be.â
âSuppose youâre right,â Nolan said. âBesides, youâre the only guy I seem to be attracted to, so maybe itâs just you?â
âDoubt it. Pretty sure thatâs not how it works.â I rubbed my scruff against his. âBut I sure like hearing it.â
âListen to you.â Nolan snickered. âWill you preen like a peacock if I tell you I think youâre beautiful and Iâve never felt that way about another man before?â
I felt lit up from the inside.
