Laughter floated around the apartment as the Trekkers group followed Sophie’s directions to put on certain clothing pieces and then pose in the studio area Amber had set up. She would then direct the next Trekker in and have the last putting on a new clothing item.

Morgan groaned as Sophie pointed to a tight-fitting top she wanted the fitness instructor to model. “Do I have to?”

“If you want your payment, you do,” Sophie said.

“I hardly drink, so your enticement of an open bar isn’t doing it for me.”

“But I do,” Pip said. “So you’ll have to go along with it for my sake.”

“And the rest of us,” Robin added. “If we have to suffer, then so do you.”

Amber smiled from behind the camera. Sophie was doing a fantastic job of organizing everyone, and Amber already knew she had plenty of good shots. She’d be able to show the outfits on different-sized bodies, which was her intention.

Two and a half hours into the afternoon, Sophie called the photoshoot a success. “Thank you, ladies. You’ve all been wonderful. I’ll open the wine, and the celebration can begin.”

“Celebration?” Pip asked.

Sophie nodded. “We all survived the Canyon Trek, which in itself is a miracle. Surely one of us should have been airlifted out for a bit of drama if nothing else.”

“Not on my treks,” Morgan said. “Never happened and,” she tapped the wooden table, “hopefully never will.”

Amber put away her photography equipment as Sophie directed everyone into seats in the cozy living room. She’d prepared platters of food, and with the wine flowing, the buzz of conversation grew louder.

“I’m dying to go back again,” Robin said. “That’s my second Canyon Trek, and I’d like to do another.”

“We could always go somewhere else,” Morgan said. “To switch it up. If you guys want to trek as a group, then give me a few destination ideas, and I can put some suggestions together. There’s a fantastic four-day summit hike at Yosemite, for instance. That’s hiking with packs on our backs like at the canyon. But we can also consider basing ourselves at one of the lodges in the park and doing a few days of day hikes. There are lots of options.”

“I like that idea,” Riley said. “It means drinks at the end of the day.”

Morgan shook her head. “I can see it now, trying to drag you all out of bed for the Half Dome sunrise walk.”

The group laughed.

“Now,” Amber said, joining them, “I’ve got a surprise.”

There were a few oohs and ahhs around the room and more laughter.

The doorbell rang, and Sophie went to answer it as Amber continued. “As you know, Morgan asked me to be the photographer last week at the canyon. I’ve put together a slideshow of all the photos I took and…” She stopped talking, her heart rate suddenly increasing as Sophie returned to the room with Shayne behind her.

“Shayne?”

A few murmurs exchanged in the group as they turned to look at the newcomer. Amber could imagine what they were thinking after the comments she’d made about her boss during their fitness sessions.
