OLD MAN Jones had never spoken so many words in my presence as he did that day in the Copperhead. To say his voice was hypnotizing would be an understatement. Even though he was kind of an ass, his tone and cadence kept my attention. I wanted him to continue his story about the illegal moonshine still he had stumbled upon, but once the band took the stage, he left. I almost didnât see him place a ten-dollar bill on the bar and disappear. If the door hadnât creaked, I would have missed it.
At the end of the night, after Dexter and Mason helped Nikki and the band pack up their gear, they joined Brooke and me at the bar.
Claude sat patiently sniffing the air beside Oliverâs bed; he surprised me by not growling once the entire time.
âSo, whoâs your next interviewee?â
âMason is going with me to talk with Ida Montgomery tomorrow. At the town hall, she mentioned how someone had completely wiped out her vegetable garden. Thought we would check it out. Could be something or nothing.â
âHer place is pretty far from where they found Annie. Think sheâs a witness to something sinister?â
âA little dramatic, donât you think?â Dexter teased and took another pull on his beer.
I rolled my eyes and turned away from my friends. No one had ever accused me of being dull. Music lolled from the jukebox; Adam sat beside it, with his back to the wall, eyes closed. At least he was nice enough to bus his own table. The extension of the Copperhead was dark, and I had a flashback to sitting at the bar with my daddy and his friends. Just like them, we tended to congregate near the taps.
âDo you think Wayne and Ray had something to do with Annieâs death? With Jacksonâs disappearance?â
Shocked at the sound of Brookeâs voice, I gasped and almost tipped over my beer. We all had different ideas running through our minds as we nursed our drinks.
âWell, she was dating Ray. Kinda.â
âWhat?â Turned sideways on her stool, Brooke gaped at Adam. âShe was?â
âWhere have you been, Brooke?â Adam stumbled across the room and stood beside Dexter. He studied Brookeâs face and chuckled.
I must admit, it was a little funny; I didnât see her jaw drop very often.
âShe wasnât only dating Jackson. She used Ray as a blocker from her daddy.â
âHow did I not know this?â
Lifting his shoulders, he set his glass on the bar for a refill and waited. He slid two dollars across the bar and climbed onto a stool.
âIs this true?â Brookeâs gaze bounced from Mason, who also shrugged, to Dexter.
âNews to me, too.â
âCome on, Brooke.â I tilted my head. âShe was only seventeen. Did you really think she and Jackson were in love?â
