Chapter 7

The black wolf leaped in front of Hallie. For the first time in as long as he could remember, Zane held onto enough of himself to stop himself from attacking the intruders outright.

They weren’t intruders, really. This was their home, and they had welcomed him. He should have known they’d be drawn by the unexpected lights on the mesa road and come to investigate.

But if they threatened his Mahalia…

Even the Zane part of him did not try to argue with the wolf’s claiming.

Rafael and Bastian did not leave the spire. They stared down with matched judgment in their furious glares. He had revealed the secrets of their petroglyphs to an outsider.

But if they were going to stop the Kingdom Guard, they needed more than shiny rocks or even their shiny teeth, much less his hopelessly dull memories.

Behind him, Hallie’s shallow, frantic breaths urged him to charge, to protect. But if he moved, he had no doubt she would flee him as quickly as the others. Right now, he had her blocked between him and the edge of the cliff. She couldn’t escape and the Villalobos brothers couldn’t get to her.

At least not without going through him.

Despite the mark on his neck, his link to the pack was still tenuous, untested. But he reached along the lines between them, hoping for a connection.

He lowered his head and tail, keeping all four feet planted in the dust.

Mine.

They must understand. Both of them had found their true mates only this spring. Hallie was not his in that way—the wolf growled softly—but he would not let her be hurt or frightened.

The pale wolf, Bastian, swung his head toward his brother. Bas was a powerful wolf in his own right, but he deferred to Rafe because Zane had gone after Rafe’s mate, Darling. If ever Zane or his wolf threatened her again, he knew he’d be dealing with two lethal werewolves, and nothing would save him.

But that same protective instinct would make them sympathetic to his claim of Hallie.

After a loaded instant, Rafe too lowered his head.

The black wolf let out a breath. All was well. For the moment, at least.

Then Hallie bolted.

She wasn’t panicked enough to go over the cliff. He hoped. Instead, she ran perpendicular to him and the other two wolves, skirting the edge of the spires.

Damn. She’d said she only power walked.

He glanced at Rafe and Bas. The pale wolf quivered, obviously longing to give chase, but the dark wolf merely stared at Zane.

Yours.

With a shake of his head and a snort, Zane whirled to pursue.

The rough path slowed her, and she obviously wasn’t willing to risk the distraction of turning on the flashlight clutched in her hand.

But she was quicker than he thought she’d be, and he wondered how much of his blood from his bitten tongue had made it down her throat, how much of his spit had seeped into her pussy.

He’d only intended to give her enough so she would be sensitized to the petroglyhs in their true glory, but her night vision seemed a little too sharp.
