For once, it’s not the noise pollution of the city that wakes me. My stomach flips and my mouth waters, forcing me to jump out of bed and rush down the hall to the bathroom. Hovering over the toilet, everything I’ve eaten in the last twenty-four hours makes a reappearance.

Oh God, this is so disgusting. Just when I think I’ve finished and there’s nothing more to come out, a second round of vomiting erupts, only this time, a warm hand rubs my back and then pulls back my hair.

When there’s nothing but dry heaves, I fall onto my ass and lean against the side of the tub, the coolness of the porcelain refreshing to my sweat-beaded forehead. Luca dampens a flannel and crouches before me, guiding me to look at him and pressing it to my forehead.

“I hate that something that’s going to be so good is making you feel so bad.”

Taking a deep breath, I say, “It shouldn’t last for long.”

“How are you feeling now?” he asks.

“Like I need to brush my teeth, and maybe eat?”

That’s the trouble with sickness, you never know if you’re hungry or going to vomit again.

“Start with your teeth and then we’ll see what’s down in the kitchen.”

He helps me up to my feet and jumps in the shower while I wash my face and brush my teeth. By the time I’m done, he’s blindly reaching out for a towel, and I lean over and hand one to him.

“You need to find a doctor.”

“I know. I’ll look into it today.”

“Make sure you do. I wanna know everything’s okay.”

Once we’re both dressed, we head down to the kitchen, and I throw my arms around Grandpa who’s sitting at the table. I notice his bag is packed and ready to go and the sinking feeling I would’ve felt a few days ago doesn’t overwhelm me. Now he’s been to visit, I don’t feel like my family is thousands of miles away. Luca was right. I can see my family whenever I want.

“I can’t believe you’re leaving already,” I say, and cross the kitchen and open the fridge. I grab the OJ and pour myself a glass while Luca hands me a couple of dry biscuits.

“Gotta get back. Gotta keep my eye on Myles. He’s a little loose without Mase around.”

“I would’ve thought Emma being pregnant would be enough to distract him.”

“It would’ve been if she didn’t kick him out when he hovers too much.”

I laugh but this is going to be my life for the next seven months with Luca. He offers me a wink as if he can read my thoughts and the asshole smirks. Taking a seat by Grandpa, I sip my OJ and smile when it doesn’t feel like it’s going to come back up.

“If I tell you something, will you keep it to yourself?” I ask him.

“Do you know me to be a gossip?” I’ve insulted him and I bite down hard on the smile wanting to spread across my face.

“No, Grandpa, I don’t.
