I could get used to this, Flynn thought as he woke up well-rested to the sound of birds chattering outside his tent, his roommates snoring, and an elephant trumpeting in the distance. The tent was surprisingly warm, but he liked how it was still thin enough that he could hear men talking on their way to do chores, and smell whatever delicious meal was being cooked up for breakfast.

He knew Lance would make sure it was something good. In the week since they’d arrived, Lance had volunteered for kitchen duty daily, and he was loving it. One morning he made a breakfast quiche, another a hearty beef hash, and everyone was praising his expertise. The Baron (who was especially fond of a good stew) had even started to make requests.

Flynn, on the other hand, had nothing to do till the first circus show started at noon, so when he woke early he’d either go back to sleep or roll over and stare up at the lanterns strung along the tent. There was something about them swaying gently in the breeze that felt very peaceful, like the tent itself. His cot was way more comfortable than his springy mattress back at Miss Clare’s Home for Boys, and he didn’t have to share a pillow with anyone. He also had a decent blanket that had apparently fallen off a wagon passing by the circus just a week before. Everyone had gotten new bedding because of it. (Flynn tried not to ask too many questions and just enjoy his good night’s sleep.) Their tent even had a trunk in the corner where they could store their personal effects for travel. He’d tucked his Flynn Rider books in there for safekeeping but kept his new satchel by him at all times… not that he had anything to carry in it yet. It just looked good, like something the real Flynn Rider would carry. It made Flynn wonder if maybe the satchel was the key to the whole new look he was trying to achieve.

But there wasn’t a lot of time to figure all that out. When the parade first rolled through his village, he hadn’t realized how much went into running a circus. Flynn learned a lot of the guys had regular acts: Hook Hand and Hook Foot performed music and dance routines along with mock sword fights during the preshow. Atilla and Vlad handled several animal performances, including a quartet of dancing geese. Ulf put on a mime show during the first act, right after the dancing poodles, while the Baron and Staylan were ringmasters. Staylan also did double duty with the ticket booth. There were acrobats, a choreographed number with horses, along with dazzling sleight-of-hand tricks, and, of course, wagons that became makeshift shoppes, selling everything from sweet treats to the moonstone tonic and the chance to peek inside the dragon cart. No one liked that gig, so the newbies always got it. Flynn had spent the last few days sweating it
