Flash me your condescending glares

Squeal to me your demeaning commands

Call me names; put me on a lead—I’ll follow you anywhere

Are you angry, sire?

Take your frustration out on me

Feeling bossy, master?

I will work till my legs give way and I crumble at your feet

And even then I will mumble:

As you please, sire, as you please!

Somewhere in the background of this dramatic interlude, Bernard prepared to die while Goldie searched the palace for an exit. There was the main door, yet it was carefully guarded. There were large windows, but her red-tipped wings would give way under the weight of her protruding belly before she could reach them.

“You go, girl!” Yuka blurted out as she applauded. Soon after silence wrapped the room in its suffocating embrace.

Harlette wondered just what had gotten into her. Should she even try apologizing? She uncrossed her arms and as she did, it began to rain sparkles on her head and the sound of clapping was heard coming from above. She looked up and saw the pink cloud floating above her, in a squatting position; sparkles came out of its rear end as it eagerly applauded her performance. She tried to move away from under it but it followed her, clapping and whistling relentlessly, glitter spewing out from its buttocks.

“Will someone tell that demon to stop shitting sparkles on my sister!” cried Yuka and the whole room shook with laughter.

The cloud above Harlette’s head disappeared suddenly.

Everyone fell silent.

Karayan stood, face void of emotion. Harlette’s heart drummed with fear.

“Well, I’m relieved that toast only works for twelve hours,” he said, pulling laughter straight back into the room.

Harlette blinked. “The toast?”

“Yes. Remember how I told you the toast cleared away all misunderstandings and encouraged all unspoken words, all unexpressed and hidden needs and feelings to be revealed…?”

Harlette smacked her forehead. “Oh, my goodness, yes.” Her mouth pressed into a thin line of shame. “But you told me it was all symbolic!”

“I lied,” said Karayan casually. “The toast is, in fact, a spell that works for twelve hours, but you needn’t fear for your life. It is law in Nimrod that all under the influence of the toast will not be killed for their actions the day the toast was pronounced.”

“They are usually killed the following day,” clarified Andreis, and as a look of utter mortification spread on Harlette’s face, the entire room once again haw-hawed.

An amused Karayan walked toward her, and against all expectation, actually expressed approval for her performance. “I was highly entertained, Harlette. However, what you did was recite. Now sing for me, but bear in mind that I wish only to hear lyrics that praise my name.”

Ishkan laughed, and so did Andreis. Tension disappeared, yet not for Harlette, who crossed her arms over her chest.

The elf lord smirked. If she wanted to play that game, it was fine by him. He came to circle her; he wasn’t quite finished ordering her about. “Uncross your arms. You would do well to clean up your body language. It must coordinate perfectly with your words.
