Eating

Sugar Shack CAFE $

(www.hbsugarshack.com; 213 Main St; mains $5-10; 6am-4pm Mon, Tue & Thu, to 8pm Wed, to 5pm Fri-Sun) Expect a wait at this HB institution, or get here early to see surfer dudes don their wet suits. Breakfast is served all day on the bustling Main St patio and inside, where you can grab a spot at the counter or a two-top. Photos of surf legends plastering the walls raise this place almost to shrine status.

Bodhi Tree VEGETARIAN $$

(www.bodhitreehb.com; 501 Main St; mains $8-16; 11am-10pm; ) Just north of downtown, this 100% vegetarian and vegan pan-Asian joint has a huge and varied menu, including mock-meat delights like pho noodle soup and Thai curries with fake ‘chicken’ and ‘beef.’ Vietnamese baguette sandwiches and wok-fried garlic ‘shrimp’ are also tasty.

Duke’s SEAFOOD $$

( 714-374-6446; www.dukeshuntington.com; 317 Pacific Coast Hwy; mains lunch $9-15, dinner $17-30; 11:30am-2:30pm Tue-Fri, 10am-2pm Sun, 5-9pm Tue-Sun) It may be touristy, but this Hawaiian-themed restaurant – named after surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku – is a kick. With unbeatable views of the beach, a long list of fresh fish and a healthy selection of sassy cocktails, it’s a primo spot to relax and show off your tan. For just drinks and appetizers, step into the Barefoot Bar (open from 3:30pm daily).

Cucina Alessá ITALIAN $$

( 714-969-2148; www.cucinaalessa.com; 520 Main St; mains lunch $9-13, dinner $12-25; 11am-10pm Sun-Thu, to 11pm Fri & Sat, breakfast Sat & Sun) Every beach town needs its favorite go-to Italian kitchen. Alessa wins hearts and stomachs with classics like Neopolitan lasagna, butternut squash ravioli and chicken marsala. Lunch brings out panini, while weekend breakfasts include frittata and ‘illegal’ French toast.

Park Bench Cafe AMERICAN $

(www.parkbenchcafe.com; 17732 Goldenwest St; mains $8-11; 7:30am-2pm Tue-Fri, 7:30am-3pm Sat & Sun; ) Sometimes Fido likes to order off the menu too. In a dog-friendly setting with shady outdoor picnic tables, try this casual outdoor restaurant in Huntington Central Park. Order an avocado-topped omelet or BLT sandwich for yourself and a juicy ‘Hound Dog Heaven’ beef patty for your four-legged friend.

Chronic Tacos CAL-MEXICAN $

(www.eatchronictacos.com; 328 11th St; mains $5-10; 9am-10pm Mon-Fri, 8am-10pm Sat, 9am-9pm Sun) Mosey into this sticker-covered shack and request a made-to-order ‘Fatty Taco.’ With the Dead playing on the stereo, a couple of surf bums chillin’ by the pool tables, and the talkative staff, you might never leave. It could be way cleaner, though.
