CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Eager feet clacked along the marble floor as Ellie led Janus down the corridor, her fingers still clung to his. It was a mere few steps before she came to a halt beside a door on either side, then with a slow turn and a bite to the lip, looked timidly to Janus with a flushed face.

“So, where are we going, anyway?”

“I was beginning to wonder,” he chuckled. “You led so confidently, it seemed rude of me to interrupt.”

Janus pointed to a door on the right just a little further down, and Ellie led him across the dozen-or-so-step distance with her chin held high. Not until they were facing the door did she finally release his hand and meet his gaze with a small spin and a smirk.

“Our perilous journey across the marble sea has come to an end.”

“I could not have survived without your escort,” Janus bowed, then retrieved the keyring from within his cloak pocket. After shuffling through the keys, he then lifted up a single one with a quirk to his brow. “Would you like the honors? You’ve been curious about these rooms, no?”

“Now what makes you think that?”

“You gave these door handles—every single one of them—a rather loud rattle that first day while you explored as I slept.”

Tutting playfully, Ellie plucked up the ring and muttered about her tactlessness as she turned the key in the lock. The door opened silently, its well-oiled hinges keeping their location secret.

Gray daylight peered through dusted courtyard windows and somberly illuminated the room. It was not at all what Ellie expected; as large as the dining hall and filled to the brim with shelves and tables. Dressing them were countless tomes and instruments that washed her over with visions of her mother’s humble workshop, the only difference between the two being the sheer volume of contents—aside from the room itself.

The door clicked closed and Janus stepped past a dazed Ellie to the nearest table, where his finger thoughtfully met the edge of an unlit retort before checking that all of the tools were in order.

“This is the alchemy laboratory. The name paints its purpose clearly.”

“You’re an alchemist?” Ellie stammered.

“Yes. I’ve made many things in this room, mostly to assist the people of Haven. Though most people have grown accustomed to the perpetual overcast through the generations, those who have lived here only a short while are in regular need of supplements to maintain their health in the absence of the sun’s rays.”

“So you have some knowledge of medicine, then?” Ellie hurried after Janus as he made his way down the length of the room.

“Medicine, and a bit of surgical knowledge. Situations can grow desperate in the asylum from time to time.” He gestured toward the tables. “I also create treatments for the afflicted. Due to the steep recovery process, they need special medicines for a few years after release. Though, I usually pass that task on to the town apothecary.” Janus shook his head as his eyes met the table.
