Chapter 17

Thankfully, the journey was quick. The driver pulled up right outside the door and Fen jumped out, ran around to Charlie’s door and helped him out. He took hold of the boy’s arm and marched up the stairs.

The woman who greeted them was lovely. She led them straight to a private room. She seemed to understand immediately that they were here for Charlie, not Fen. Though Fen acknowledged Charlie’s body language, reminiscent of a kicked puppy, probably made it obvious. She asked Charlie his name and smiled warmly when he told her.

“Charlie, all we are going to do today is to see if you need any medical attention. Take some evidence. That’s all. If in the future you want to take things further, the evidence will be here waiting. Okay?”

She waited calmly for Charlie to respond. Eventually, he nodded. The woman, whose name tag said Dawn, looked at Fen.

“Um…I’ll be in the waiting room,” he said, before scurrying out. Charlie barely knew him. It wasn’t like his presence would be any sort of comfort.

In the tiny plain waiting room by the reception desk, Fen turned off his phone like a coward and paced. Wondering how long it was going to take for anyone to notice they were gone. The driver could be informing Xander right now.

Fen would have bet his soul that this wasn’t the first time the earl had hurt Charlie like this. So that meant everyone thought it was fine, acceptable. The way things were done. Fen balled his hands into fists.

He paced the waiting room for an eternity. Filled with nervous energy. Every minute feeling like an ice age.

Then, in a horrible quirk of fate, at the exact moment Charlie was brought out, Xander stormed in.

The first thought that went through Fen’s mind was how good Xander looked in his tailored, knee-length black coat. Then everything went wrong.

Charlie took one look at Xander and fell to his knees, bowing his head. There were audible gasps from the onlookers.

Xander glared at Charlie, kneeling on the floor. The air thickened with tension. For a moment everything froze, then the nurse gasped, “I’m calling the police,” and walked towards the reception desk.

Everyone glared at Xander. Tall, imposing. Radiating aggression and a cold fury. Fen winced. He didn’t think there was any point in trying to explain it wasn’t Xander who had hurt Charlie. Looking at the scene, even he doubted it. He remembered Xander calmly saying Fen could sleep with either him or the earl, as if it were no big deal. Maybe Xander had used Charlie as a vessel before. Fen scowled at his own irrational flash of jealousy. It really wasn’t the issue here. There were far more serious concerns.

Like this complete disaster that was unfolding before his eyes. Fen hated that everyone was looking at Xander at thinking the worst. Xander was cruel, obnoxious, and vile, but Fen knew he would never hurt anyone like that. Even so, his desire to defend Xander, to protect him, was baffling, but he didn’t have time to ponder it now.
