CAMPING OUTSIDE YOSEMITE

You’ll find more camping options outside Yosemite than within the park itself – both US Forest Service (USFS) campgrounds and dispersed camping, which is allowed in most national forests. Dispersed camping is a great way to go if you crave solitude (no nearby campers) and affordability (it’s free) – but remember, you’re entirely on your own, which means no toilets or potable water (bring your own or come with a means to filter or purify stream water). If you’re going to build a fire, you’ll also need a free fire permit, which you can pick up at USFS ranger stations or print from www.preventwildfireca.org. Ranger stations also sell detailed USFS maps, which are helpful for navigating the maze of dirt roads. Finally, note that some areas (along Tioga Rd east of the park, for instance) don’t allow dispersed camping; watch for signs.
