Chapter Fourteen
Three hours into the Kerrville music festival, and Vickie had been ready to go home two and half hours ago. Letting the kids convince her to come with Tommy had been a mistake. At least Seth was enjoying himself.
A trail of white lights and colorful flags ran from tree to tree creating a fanciful ceiling with the night sky overhead. People sitting on the long, wood tables tapped their feet to the live music. Others packed the dance floor spinning to the fast-paced fiddle. Ashley had danced herself to exhaustion.
Tonight she could have been here with Jake. Thinking of the man who had been the first to invite her here made her heart hurt. Tommy was not making it easy. He told the same self-important stories repeatedly.
Ashley now slept on her fatherâs shoulder. Her new pink cowboy boots dangled as he held her on one arm. He had been showering the kids with gifts for the last week. She had to give him credit; as a father heâd been more attentive the last six days than he had been at any time during their marriage.
Vickie hinted to Tommy that she wanted to go home, but he seemed determined to stay all night. He was trying to prove something, but she hadnât figured it out yet.
A blonde woman that seemed vaguely familiar stood next to Vickie. âWhat a precious picture of father and daughter. You must be so happy to have him back.â
Not having anything nice to say, she smiled and nodded. With a sigh, she scanned the crowd again. The long, wood tables were covered in red-checkered vinyl. Mason jars and plastic cups cluttered the surface.
She hadnât wanted to come with Tommy, he had the kids beg her. Why was she so weak sometimes? Tommy had a way of making her do things she didnât want to do.
To make her mood worse, everyone that came through the Mercantile made sure she heard the latest rumor. Jake had asked Anjelica to the music festival.
She didnât have time to juggle Jake and her children. With Tommy, she had to stay on guard. Scanning the crowd again, she put her hands in her pockets. Maybe it had just been a rumor to stir her up. She hadnât seen Jake or Anjelica.
He did seem to move a bit fast after not dating anyone for the last few years. Her mother had a great time fawning over Tommy and pointing out the fact that Jake was dating someone else.
Seth ran up to his father, face flushed and hair sweaty despite the cool nip in the air. âDad, can I have some more money? The guys want to play the games and buy some food.â
âSure, buddy.â Tommy turned to her. âHey Vic. Can you get my wallet? I canât reach it with Ashleyâs dead weight.â
âDo you want me to take her?â
âNo, I donât want to give her up.â He looked at the man next to him and pushed blond strands from Ashleyâs face. âEasy to take âem for granted until theyâre taken from you.
