CHAPTER 8
Honk! Honnnnnnk!
I barely noticed the car horn blaring outside. Inside, the Brunos were having a laid-back Saturday breakfast.
“Take your dinosaur off the table, Hunter, it’s disgusting!” Kerry said.
“Rooooar! I’b godda eat you up!” Hunter said, imitating a tyrannosaurus with allergies.
“Your sister is right,” my dad said. “We don’t play with toys at the table.”
Hunter climbed off his chair. But before he put his dinosaur away, he lunged it toward Kerry and said, “I’m an EJ-saurus, so watch out!”
“Daaa-ad! ” Kerry screamed.
“Hunter! I want you in the time-out chair!” Dad bellowed.
“Nooooooooo! ”
Remember Kerry’s anti-school disease? Well, you guessed it. The cause was none other than EJ.
Maybe T-Jam could recruit him for a junior chapter of the Badd Boyz. (The Badd Little Boyz?) Honk! Honnnnnnk!
“What is going on out there?” my mom said.
I went to the living room and looked out the front window.
I saw D’s car. I opened the front door and walked onto the porch.
“Little bro!” D called out.
I jumped down the steps and ran to the car. I could see Remo in the passenger seat, and T-Jam and Ice Box in the back. “Hey, what’s up, guys?”
Remo got up out and folded the front seat up. “Come on. We’re going to the mall.”
I laughed. “Well, wait a minute. This is kind of — ”
“Don’t you want to go?” D asked.
“Well … sure, but — ”
“You need to ask your parents?” Remo said with a mocking grin.
“Yo, Remo, lighten up,” T-Jam said from the backseat. “We’re not middle-aged, like you dudes.
I had to ask, too, all right?”
“Okay, okay,” Remo grumbled.
“I’ll be right back,” I said.
I ran inside. Mom, Dad, and Kerry were still eating eggs and bacon. I could hear Hunter making dinosaur noises from the living room.
“I’m going to the mall,” I said, grabbing a windbreaker from the alcove behind the kitchen.
“Aren’t you going to finish your breakfast?” my mom asked.
“I’m not hungry,” I said.
“Say hi to Mary Anne,” Kerry called out as I ran to the front door. I didn’t bother to mention who I was really going with.
The last thing I heard as I closed the door behind me was Hunter’s voice saying, “Is by tibe-out over yet?”
I trotted to the car and squeezed into the backseat with T-Jam and Ice Box. “Man, it’s a good thing you ain’t Butcher Boy,” Ice remarked. “We’d be hurting back here.”
D floored the accelerator. The car took off with a squeal of tires.
If my parents had looked out the front window, they would have been totally freaked. I’d vaguely mentioned T-Jam to them, but I never said anything about the car or the older guys.
Through the open window, the early autumn wind tossed my hair straight back and blew away some of the stale cigarette smell. I looked at T-Jam. His eyes were glimmering. “Weather, huh?” he said.
“Yeah.” I smiled and looked straight ahead. D had turned onto Atlantic Avenue and was
weaving through traffic. I could see people staring at the car as we passed.
This was fun. I had no idea why we were going to the mall or what we were going to do.
