He had a potential one in Annie, so why lead the police to her?
Chances are he knows Annie will be taken to a safe place and guarded. Is this part of his plan?
If so then something has to take place at Annie’s house, the question is what? The house was given the all clear as far as devices go.
She reads what she has written, hoping it will spark some theory in her mind. Undoing her hair clip, she shakes her hair loose and walks to the window. Her room is at the back of the hotel with a view over the car park, which is not well lit. She draws the curtains and continues her questions, to which there are as yet no answers.
Her phone rings, causing a shot of adrenalin to increase her heart rate and quicken her breathing. Is this a call to duty, she wonders. She picks the receiver up quickly.
“Hello, DS Jackson.”
She’s almost disappointed when Dr Grainger replies.
“It’s Myles here, the DI has asked me to have talk with you about Stephen’s history. I wonder if now might be a good time?”
“Yes, now would be fine. Where should I meet you?”
“I’ll be in the bar, say in five minutes, if that’s okay.”
“Great. See you there.”
Becky takes a look in the mirror, checks she looks okay then picks up her bag and is about to leave her room when her phone rings again
“Hi, it’s James here. I have so many questions going round in my head, I won’t get any sleep if I can’t discuss them with someone. Please say you’ll come downstairs and have a drink with me, even if it’s only a coffee.”
“Sorry,” Becky replies, “but I’ve agreed to meet Myles in the bar. See you in the morning.”
She smiles as she replaces the receiver.
She finds Myles seated at a corner table away from all the other tables, two glasses of white wine at the ready.
“I’ve taken the liberty of ordering some white wine, not a great choice by the glass I’m afraid. I hope that’s okay with you. Once we start discussing the case I don’t want anyone coming near us. If you sit on the inside, then any pictures you’re looking at can’t be observed by anyone else.”
Myles smiles as he stands and holds her chair for her.
“That’s great, thank you. And also for taking the time to discuss Stephen’s history with me. I’m afraid I might have given DI O’Riordan the impression I don’t understand how dangerous this man is, but believe me I do. What I find difficult to understand is how a brother, especially a twin brother, could kill his own sister. I have brothers and I often have disagreements with them, but I can’t imagine one of them wanting to kill me.”
“Yes, but your upbringing was one where your parents treated you all with love and respect, whereas Stephen’s father was cruel to him, humiliated him for his bedwetting, and at the same time praised his sister for every little thing she did.
