The reply was almost as quick.

Will do. Be careful.

Keely smiled, and typed a final reply.

When am I not?

Jonah was able to drive to Furzley Lane on automatic pilot. He had made his way here after work numerous times during the months he’d spent with Jojo.

For all that he’d decided not to think about her, his tired mind kept returning to Jojo before tacking guiltily toward Milly and Michelle.

Lightman was his usual quiet self during the journey and Jonah was thankful for the peace. It gave him time to gradually get his thoughts under control. To focus them back onto the Lennox sisters.

Keely’s departure from the station was still bothering him. It was all bothering him, really. But his most troubling thoughts related to the wisdom of playing Keely’s game. Whichever way he looked, there was doubt. Whether it was about how Keely felt about Nina, or how Callum Taylor might be involved, or why she so particularly wanted to tell her lengthy story.

Having become convinced that she was a manipulative psychopath who had tried to bring down everyone who’d stood in her way, he had found himself doubting even that in the last hour. Even as someone who generally cleaved to indecision in order to avoid jumping to conclusions, Jonah was finding the uncertainty a strain.

By the time he turned onto the long stretch of Furzley Lane, he’d been over the same ground in his mind a good dozen times. He found himself slowing just before Jojo’s driveway out of habit and tried to cover the slip by asking Lightman how far down the house was.

“It’s quite a bit farther,” his sergeant told him. “I’ll let you know once we’re close.”

Jonah nodded and let his eyes wander briefly over the cottage as he sped up again. He took it in at a glimpse. The perfectly designed garden. The Jeep sitting on the driveway. The low-hanging eaves. But it was clear even from a glance that the house was in darkness. All the curtains were drawn and there was no sign of movement. Jojo had probably been in bed for hours.

He did his best to suppress a rush of disappointment, asking himself what he had even wanted. To see her? To catch a glimpse of the woman he’d had to walk away from? The woman who might still be angry with him and might, still worse, have moved on?

You’re an idiot, he told himself. Something he seemed to have told himself a lot over the past few months.

He drove on down the lane more quickly until Lightman told him to pull in. They were outside another cottage, this one overgrown and in what looked like a poor state of repair. As the lights hit the whitewash of the walls, he saw patches of moss and a large stain where it looked like one of the gutters had become blocked.

O’Malley had passed on several interesting facts about the house. Jane Lennox had purchased it eighteen years ago, using money left to her by her father.
