ALAIN MAILLAND

Alain Mailland’s works defy the imagination, because the forms he produces are largely created on the lathe using unique mounting and turning techniques he has perfected since the early 1990s. His observations of nature inform his designs; as a child he studied the forms of plants and made herbariums with his mother. After turning and carving a new piece, usually in green wood, he lets it dry, monitoring the development of distortions and slowing down the drying process if necessary. When the piece is dry, he carves, sands, textures, sandblasts, and steam-bends the wood into something almost magical. Turning is a magical process that gives a center to the piece and allows you to make hollow forms. Everything in the universe is made with circular elements, from cells and atoms to galaxies.
