If you tell me to get to a place for eleven thirty, you can bet your bottom dollar I’m getting there at eleven fifteen and waiting. I’d elected to wait outside on the sidewalk until it was time for me to go inside. I couldn’t believe how busy it was, the sidewalk was a living mass all moving as one towards the steps into the lobby.

After the first few people recognized me it seemed that word had gotten around and I felt the heaviness of stranger’s eyes on me until I turned and pulled my coat collar up to cover my face. It was dark out, the street lights made it just bright enough to obscure the pin pricks of stars in the sky’s canopy, and I scanned the crowds for friendly faces.

I spotted Rhys, just the side of his face actually. His profile was better looking that my own face front-on. The gruffness of the stubble against his cheek and jaw, the depth of the dark eyes that— no. This was just the ‘I’ve not had a boyfriend in a long time’ talking. Gemma said he was a bad guy, and in the takes one to know one frame of mind, he must be a real monster.

His face turned and he saw me. My blood felt hotter, pumping through my body like liquid fire and illuminating my skin with, oh wait, that wasn’t normal. My hands were glowing because of my magic, I’d gotten flustered when he’d looked at me and now my hands were radiating a white light.

Please don’t conjure eggs again, please.

Two hands gripped my shoulders and started talking rapidly. Marie and the gang had arrived and shaken me from my thoughts enough to extinguish the brewing magic outburst in my fingertips. “You’re here! Okay, so I have the tickets, I got an extra one for Gemma because she told me she’d be coming but I figured she’d have come with you.”

“She said she had to work,” I shrugged. “I don’t know what she meant by that but I didn’t want to ask any questions.”

“Your sister is a tracker, isn’t that right? Your family must be so proud!” Brenda smiled.

“I always wanted my daughter to get into tracking, she said it was too dangerous,” Trish huffed, rolling her eyes. “She decided to become a surgeon instead, such a waste.”

“She might get into it later on,” Abigail assured her, “don’t give up hope.” It was a relief to feel like the most mentally stable person in a group.

Marie handed each of us our tickets and I went inside to get the drinks and snacks that everyone had requested. I’d pre-ordered the popcorn when I arrived to make sure we got the fresh stuff Trish preferred, so once I’d collected and distributed everyone’s food, we progressed to the ticket check for the screens.

As the group lined up, I was at the back. I realized the bathrooms were on this side so I asked Brenda to hold my drink and hurried off to the facilities.
