If you tell me to get to a place for eleven thirty, you can bet your bottom dollar Iâm getting there at eleven fifteen and waiting. Iâd elected to wait outside on the sidewalk until it was time for me to go inside. I couldnât believe how busy it was, the sidewalk was a living mass all moving as one towards the steps into the lobby.
After the first few people recognized me it seemed that word had gotten around and I felt the heaviness of strangerâs eyes on me until I turned and pulled my coat collar up to cover my face. It was dark out, the street lights made it just bright enough to obscure the pin pricks of stars in the skyâs canopy, and I scanned the crowds for friendly faces.
I spotted Rhys, just the side of his face actually. His profile was better looking that my own face front-on. The gruffness of the stubble against his cheek and jaw, the depth of the dark eyes thatâ no. This was just the âIâve not had a boyfriend in a long timeâ talking. Gemma said he was a bad guy, and in the takes one to know one frame of mind, he must be a real monster.
His face turned and he saw me. My blood felt hotter, pumping through my body like liquid fire and illuminating my skin with, oh wait, that wasnât normal. My hands were glowing because of my magic, Iâd gotten flustered when heâd looked at me and now my hands were radiating a white light.
Please donât conjure eggs again, please.
Two hands gripped my shoulders and started talking rapidly. Marie and the gang had arrived and shaken me from my thoughts enough to extinguish the brewing magic outburst in my fingertips. âYouâre here! Okay, so I have the tickets, I got an extra one for Gemma because she told me sheâd be coming but I figured sheâd have come with you.â
âShe said she had to work,â I shrugged. âI donât know what she meant by that but I didnât want to ask any questions.â
âYour sister is a tracker, isnât that right? Your family must be so proud!â Brenda smiled.
âI always wanted my daughter to get into tracking, she said it was too dangerous,â Trish huffed, rolling her eyes. âShe decided to become a surgeon instead, such a waste.â
âShe might get into it later on,â Abigail assured her, âdonât give up hope.â It was a relief to feel like the most mentally stable person in a group.
Marie handed each of us our tickets and I went inside to get the drinks and snacks that everyone had requested. Iâd pre-ordered the popcorn when I arrived to make sure we got the fresh stuff Trish preferred, so once Iâd collected and distributed everyoneâs food, we progressed to the ticket check for the screens.
As the group lined up, I was at the back. I realized the bathrooms were on this side so I asked Brenda to hold my drink and hurried off to the facilities.
