THE SORROW IN ZACKâS voice tore through Sig with painful familiarity. He knew the yearning for the touch of another, the skin-hunger which had been, for the first time, placated by Cooper and Ash. He also knew the fear of giving a hot touch. âWe can help you with that,â he said. âYou teach me better control, and weâll teach you how to mesh with others.â He glanced at David, who nodded.
âUncle Owenâs exercises,â David said, only too grateful for a change of topic. âHave you ever meshed your energy with anyone elseâs?â
âHow do you mean?â Zack had, apparently, no idea. None whatsoever, which made his level of control even more remarkable.
âHowâbout this,â David said. âHowâbout we go down to the lake and rinse off so I can feel human again. And then we can show each other a thing or two, yeah?â
Sig rolled his eyes. âThe lake will be a torture and Iâll be so spent, I wonât be any good for anything else.â
âI told you,â Zack said. âThereâs a way, and thereâs a reason I spend my free days in the desert by the lake. Letâs go before the air gets too cold.â
This drew a smile on Davidâs face, which pleased Sig immensely. He punched his shoulder with a smile. âYeah, I know, I know. Nothingâs too cold for you, big guy.â
âNot in Nevada in August, certainly,â David retorted as he headed for the tent. Sig watched him disappear while Zack rushed off to get his own towel.
Now that he was alone, he examined his feelings for the first time. Did he feel betrayed by David? No, not really â David had tried to protect him from hurting others after that one fatal fire â but he felt disappointed. Even though he had suspected the nature of Davidâs involvement, he hadnât wanted it to be true.
He forgave him, true, but did he entirely trust him?
Only time would tell. For now, he had to stay keen and sharp, and endure. He was in the desert, after all. The dry air, the scent of dust and the grit of sand which permeated his clothing was so familiar, Sig could slip back into his old habits like into a pair of well-worn jeans.
The moon floated in the clear sky, lighting their way down the sandy valley. They walked in a row, wearing a thin path into the dune, a path which wind would obliterate by morning. He watched David lead on, bringing two oversized beach towels and a bottle of water to drink.
Zack followed in his footsteps with a towel tucked under his arm, wearing only his cargo pants.
Sig walked the rear guard, aware of every sound. Shadows shifted around him, marking the rocks that stood like sentinels above their camp. A movement overhead caught his attention â a bat, out for its evening meal. The cool air poured down the hill, joining their parade to the water that retained the heat of the day.
They were alone. Sig knew the mountain lion had gone hunting in a quieter neighborhood, and he didnât feel anyone else around.
