Chapter 19

He gestured for me to sit down on one of the chairs across from his desk.

“Why don’t you start from the beginning? Facts only, please. I wanted to talk to you about this anyway,” he said.

He crossed over to the room and sat down at his desk. Notably, he didn’t take the coffee. Normally, he would have taken it immediately and looked over the moon about it, but he was trying to show that this was not a casual conversation.

“I think we want to talk about it for different purposes,” I said. “But I think we have the same goals. We both want this case to be solved, Fitts. That’s all this is about.”

“Let’s keep it that way,” he said, leaning back in his chair.

“Couldn’t agree more,” I said. He was the one who had an issue with that. Not me.

He gave me a look for a moment before pulling his notepad out to take notes.

“All right. You can start,” he said.

I nodded. “To be clear, everything I told you before still stands. I had nothing to do with this. I don’t know how I got knocked out, but all I remember is that I was in the store and got dizzy. Then the lights went out and next thing I knew someone was dead and the police were there.”

He nodded. “That is what you said before. Are you just here to tell me this again?”

“No. Since then, I’ve done a little digging. Namely in the store’s security cameras,” I said.

“We already have those, Selene. There’s nothing on them of interest. The camera wasn’t pointed at enough of the store to see who closed the blinds or turned out the lights. And besides, once the blinds are shut, the whole thing can’t pick up enough light to record.”

“There was something else though. A moment that was captured on camera. That’s why I wanted to see the footage. I knew that the store intern Mitchell had exited the building to have a snack, and Tony claims he stepped out to make a call. But besides me, Brian, and Chloe, there was one other person in the store. Someone who was on that camera.”

He looked skeptical. “So you think this mystery person is the murderer? For what purpose?”

“There’s something you need to see on the tapes. I have a copy of it here.”

I pulled out my phone and queued the video up. I handed it to Fitts.

“Pay close attention to what the man in the video is doing. Then, watch Chloe’s reaction,” I said.

Fitts pressed play and watched the short video. By the end of it, he was raising his eyebrows. “So we have a shoplifter in the store then,” he said.

“One that Chloe saw too,” I said. “And it’s not clear if he was the one messing with the lights or not.”

Fitts handed me my phone back and rubbed at his jaw thoughtfully. “That does give him a motive,” he said. “I’m not sure if it’s the strongest motive in the world, but people have killed for less.
