As the door falls shut behind him, Phoenix drops a plastic grocery bag onto the kitchen counter. I smile at him and point to the coffee table where the remainder of my Chinese dinner is sitting. Once the clock hit eight, I was too hungry to wait for him anymore. âI have leftovers for you.â
He comes over, the contents of his plastic bag in his hands, leaning over the back of the couch and kissing me quickly before coming around to sit down. âGreat minds think alike. I brought you some snacks.â He hands me a pile of processed foods, keeping a couple protein bars and an apple in his own lap.
âWhyâd you grab all this food?â
Phoenix shrugs. âI was at the store. I got you some of the snacks you like.â
I look through the pile on my lap, seeing most of my favorite candies and snacks. âThank you?â
âYeah, sure.â He flips the TV on and immediately turns Netflix to the screen. âI saw this show on my recommendations the other day that I think youâll like. I watched the trailer, but weâll have to see if itâs any good.â
I open up my bag of mini Twix. âWell, letâs see.â
Phoenix turns it on, dropping the remote beside him, reaching for the bag of Cheetos.
I pull it away from him. âYouâre on a diet.â
âUgh, fine.â He leans forward, grabbing the container of chicken.
When he leans back, I rest my head on his shoulder, taking a deep breath. This⦠this is what I want. I want to just chill, exist. Be able to lounge around with my favorite person, not have to worry about life or death. Be able to watch a TV show, curled up on the couch, snack on some food. I want to be able to spend a day not having to worry about anything else. Not think about anything else. Not even have bad memories surface. When I'm with Phoenix, I feel like I can take on the world, bear everything on my shoulders. Like the weight of whatâs happened is lighter.
When Phoenix smiles at me, laughs near me, talks to me, he makes my life better. He makes me forget all the bad and start remembering the good. Even something as small as bringing me these snacks makes me feel cared for and loved. He notices the small things and keeps them in his memory. He knows me so well I can just sit here and be. I didnât realize how much I missed this until now, sitting around completely comfortable. I twist my ring on my finger, smiling down at it. Someday I wonât feel any more sadness when I look down at this ring, but for now, Iâm glad that the pain hurts a little bit less.
