Just when I thought I had started to figure things out, of course something had to throw a wrench in it.

I did have stronger feelings for Rowan, and as we walked back toward the apartment together, he wore a smile the size of his whole face after I had told him that. I was happy too. I was happy that I felt as though I had decided something, as though I had taken a step in a direction instead of swimming around in circles inside of my head.

I wanted to be with Rowan, and I wanted to go back home with him. I even was pretty much decided on not trying to integrate magic into the mortal world. The warnings were pretty clear, and I trusted what Rowan was saying about it. It made sense to me that the magic should be protected for all of us. I was even ready to leave this city now.

The only thing we had left to do, was pick up Gregory from the apartment and have the woman show us how to leave here and get back to Earth. But the closer we got on our climb up the fire escape to the open window, the more we could hear a commotion going on inside. As soon as we reached the apartment and stepped through the window, I could see that not only had Gregory’s glamour somehow been broken (which was, by all accounts, impossible), but that he was also trying to fight off the woman whom we had been staying with in what looked like her attempt to try and kill him.

“What the hell?” I muttered in a daze as I tried to make sense of what was happening.

Not having the first clue of what was going on, Rowan jumped into the fight just in time to save Gregory’s life (which I was actually surprised that he did). He doused the woman in a cloud of Fae magic that immobilized her and sent her body crashing to the ground like a stiff plank. The only thing that she could still move was her eyes, which were darting angrily back and forth between the three of us. Thankfully, her lips were frozen because I didn’t much care to hear what she had to say to us. Although I did want to know why she was suddenly attacking Gregory.

I turned my attention from her and back to the guys. Gregory was standing and looking stunned.

“Are you okay?” I asked him.

“Yeah,” he said as he gave Rowan a nod. “I just can’t believe that you saved my life. I was pretty sure you hated me. Thank you.”

Rowan didn’t bother with a nod back. He was just doing the right thing, and I doubted that he personally cared whether or Gregory lived or died. He knew that I would care though. I gave Rowan a little smile of thanks too.

“How did you break my glamour?” Rowan asked. “Such a thing is not possible.”

“Tell that to her,” Gregory scoffed as he looked at the woman with disdain.
