The radio station employees from KLIK and its sister station, KFRU, in nearby Columbia, didnât necessarily take part in the press corps at McNallyâs, which some viewed as for the print media. The radio station staff members often got together on their own for drinks and appetizers on the weekends or for game night during the week.
James easily moved back and forth between the two social circles. Matt LaCasse, the assistant news director for KFRU, first met James during a company party in January 2005. Matt, a twenty-six-year-old whoâd grown up on a small farm in Iowa, always remembered what it felt like to be the new guy at work, and as a result, he always went out of his way to invite new people out with the group. James had immediately struck Matt as a friendly, outgoing guy, gregarious even, who was good at making people laugh. He could hold the attention of those around him, and Matt was drawn to him right away. James seemed like he would be a cool guy to hang out with.
Though the two radio stations were considered sister stations, and Jefferson City was only about a thirty-minute drive from Columbia, there was a definite divide between the two cities. Columbia was often seen as the liberal college town neighbor to the more conservative Jefferson City, and some didnât make the trip.
After their initial meeting, Matt made a point to give James a call during the week to give him a heads-up about that weekendâs plans. James was more than welcome to attend, Matt told him, and he usually did.
They frequented several of the college bars in Columbia, and although they were home by nine or ten on any weeknight outing, they often closed the bars down on the weekends. There were more times than not that Matt, James, and the rest of the group saw the lights of the bar come on, signaling the end of a long night of drinking.
Though the mood was light during the nights out, James and Matt did talk some about their backgrounds. James told him he was originally from Jefferson City and that heâd moved back after living in Boston. His wife had died, and he wanted to come home to start over. James wasnât specific about how his wife passed away other than that it had something to do with her kidneys.
Matt was used to the Midwest, where people took each other at face value. He had spent two years on the East Coast and didnât feel that the people there were sincere. They never looked you in the eye and didnât go out of their way to say hello or offer a smile. Though he acknowledged he may have been a little naive at times, Matt preferred the outgoing, friendly nature of people in the Midwest.
When James opened up about Julieâs death, Matt saw no reason to question him. He thought of himself as a farm kid from Iowa and wasnât about to push James for specific details on a painful topic.
