Sticking to the shadows, Nora trailed Florence as she strode through the street. Heavy rain soaked Noraâs clothes, the fabric clinging to her skin and weighing her down. She swept aside the hair plastered to her face and prowled into the night. The tree canopy did little to hinder the downpour. Florence ducked into an alleyway before slipping under the eaves of a single doorway. She knocked three times, then a warm light spilled into the drenched alley. Nora summoned her water magic and used it to manipulate the rain to form steps. She raced up the floating puddles and onto the roofâher body moving swiftlyâand crept along the rooftop until she had a clear view of who had answered the door. She may have been unable to hear their conversation over the pouring rain, but at least she now had a visual.
A tall, dark-skinned man with cropped black hair and an amused expression stood in the doorway. His brown eyes glanced around the alley as he leant on the doorframe, crossing his muscular arms over his chest. Florence spoke, the manâs shoulders shifting in reply as he tilted his head back. Nora may not have been able to hear them, but the two in the doorway were very clearly enjoying themselves.
Shivering, Nora started to regret her decision to follow Florence. She had spotted the woman on her way home from working at the flower shop and had made the quick decision to trail Florence. She hadnât wanted to miss the opportunity to learn more, but now⦠now she wondered if Florence was merely catching up with a friend.
Beneath her, Florence retrieved a flat wooden box from her cloak, similar to the one Nora had brought Sage. The top was painted with white flowers and little navy-blue orbs, and Florence handed it to the man. His eyebrows drew in and he nodded stiffly. A few inaudible words passed between the pair and then Florence stepped back into the rain.
Maybe this little endeavour had not been a waste after all. What was in the box Florence had given the man? And what had they been discussing to make the conversation turn serious? With so many questions running through her mind, Nora had forgotten about Florence. The woman was heading back the way she had come, the rain easing to a patter as it fell around her. Nora caught up, treading with care on the rooftops and using her wind and water magic to steady herself and stay close to her target.
Florence stopped abruptly, her gaze flickering upwards, and Nora quickly grabbed hold of one of the branches above, pulling herself up into the tree canopy. Florenceâs eyes narrowed, searching the leaves. Nora stilled, holding her breath as she watched the woman below. Scowling, Florence stepped closer to the building, disappearing from Noraâs line of sight. The rain poured with a vengeance and Noraâs feet felt slick against the branch on which she crouched. Her eyes darted around her.
Fuck! Where had Florence
