She woke up to every member of the International Drummers’ Association simultaneously practicing their most frenetic solos in her head. She didn’t know if the International Drummers’ Association was actually a thing, but they had to be, because how else would they all have been practicing in there? She slitted her eyes open, and groaned as the morning light stabbed her in the eyeballs.

She sat up. The movement made her stomach do a somersault. Her vision cleared enough to show her a glass of water next to the bed, and two headache pills lying beside it. She downed them both, and drained the glass.

That was when the memories of the previous night started to come back to her.

“Did I really…” Her voice felt like sandpaper in her throat. As she stood, she caught sight of the bottle of whiskey sitting on her dresser. Jack must have put it there, because he certainly hadn’t given it back to her. She grabbed the bottle and pleaded to it as she walked out of the room. “No, no, no. Tell me I didn’t.”

“It’s all right,” a voice called out from the living room. A male voice. Jack. “Fort Knox, remember? My lips are sealed.”

She groaned again, and not from the volume of his voice, even though it felt like he had stolen a set of drumsticks from one of the drummers for the sole purpose of driving them through her eardrums. She shielded her eyes from the light streaming through the windows as she padded into the living room. “How much did I tell you?”

“I believe the word ‘spy’ was mentioned. And… I may have convinced you to go on the run.” He paused, and looked down at his feet. “And you invited me to come with you.”

Nina followed his eyes to the floor, where a suitcase that wasn’t hers sat between his feet.

She rubbed her eyes. The suitcase was still there. “I’ve heard of pink elephants,” she said, “but not this.”

“Does that mean the offer isn’t still open?”

“I was drunk when I came up with that spectacularly bad idea,” she said. “What’s your excuse?”

“It was something you said,” he said. “That thing about how I seemed like the type who had always wanted an adventure.” He looked back up at her. “No pressure, mind you. If you’ve decided not to run after all, or just don’t relish the thought of running away with some guy you had barely spoken ten words to before last night, I completely understand. But if you’re still open to the idea…” He shrugged. “I moved here because I wanted a change of pace. Turned out it was mostly the same pace with different scenery. The way I see it, I can stay here and always wonder what might have been… or I can take a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live a life of adventure and intrigue with a sexy secret agent. And put like that, how is the choice not obvious?”

Nina looked down at the sweatpants from last night, which she was still wearing.
