CHAPTER 13
Before I got to the office, I called Tamsin to see if the meeting room was free and texted Abi to come meet us ASAP if she could. Thankfully she was nearby and said she would probably beat me to the office. Great, I told her.
I arrived armed with coffee and bagels. Tamsin had texted to tell me she had set us up in the meeting room and when I entered there were four neat piles of documents in the center of the table.
Abi and Tamsin were already seated as I sat the coffee and bagels down.
“I’m really hoping neither of you like poppy seed with jalapeno cream cheese so I don’t have to share,” I smiled.
Tamsin had sprung to her feet to get a knife from the kitchen.
“No such luck, sister,” Abi laughed. “That’s my recipe for bagel heaven, right there.”
Once we were settled and had swooned over the taste of the bagels, it was time to get down to business. I ran my eye over all the files on the table. I liked the fact that a lot of an attorney’s work still came down to pen and paper—or ink and paper, more to the point. We still had a lot of our files on the computer system but working with paper copies allowed us to work better as a team.
“Okay, Abi. Why don’t we start with you. What have you managed to dig up.”
Abi pursed her lips and shook her head regretfully. “I hate to say it, Robin but I don’t have much by way of fresh material. There’s just not a lot to go on. All the information I have at hand right now leads to dead ends. At the moment, I can’t find anything concrete that might help us find out who DeShawn’s real killer was. There are no other witnesses down the alley, and there’s no CCTV footage that provides a decent angle looking into the alley. The short of it is, that leaves us with pretty much nothing.”
I wasn’t impressed. I wasn’t angry with Abi—I knew that if anyone could find fresh leads and fresh evidence, she could. It was rare for her to come back to me empty handed. It was just frustrating.
“That’s not what I want to hear,” I said.
“I know, Robin. I’m not quitting, you know that,” Abi said. The minute we’re done here I’m back on the horse. There has to be something I can find. In the meantime, though, I have been putting lot of thought into our defense. And the best option keeps coming back to self-defense. It has to be the best option to get out of this mess. That’s the way you have to get Ebony to plead. I can’t see another way out of this.”
I shook my head.
“I hear you, Robin, but that won’t work,” I said. “The problem we have is Ebony gave a statement to the police at the time of her arrest stating that she had nothing to do with the death.
