NURSE!
No one knew that life was fragile better than Merrit Dunsky. Miss a line on a chart and a patient might undergo an MRI while they had a metal valve in their heart, or wind up getting a medicine they were allergic to. Forget to check a box and the patient might not resume the life-maintaining medication that was temporarily halted while they were undergoing surgery. Get truly distracted and a patient might get someone else’s medication altogether. Merrit had been a nurse for thirty years, and while she’d made her share of mistakes, she by God hadn’t made more than her share, and none that were life-threatening. She was quite proud of that.
Not that it wasn’t hard to stay focused in a place where there was so much pain and suffering. Especially a place where it would be so easy to get her hands on a little something extra to keep her going. But Merrit didn’t get her reputation for being infallible playing about with that kind of malarkey. She didn’t get her reputation for being a grim, humorless, old-fashioned martinet with no personal life that way either, but that was fine. Merrit had known who she was since she was twelve years old, hiding in the attic and pissing her panties while the thing that killed her parents slithered around making loud snuffing noises in the hallway beneath her. The knight who had rescued Merrit and arranged for her to be adopted by a Templar family took care of that. Merrit didn’t need dances in the rain on warm nights in Paris. Merrit just needed a routine and a home that wasn’t filled with personal weakness and chaos.
But in the three decades that Merrit had been working for the Templars, she’d never felt so poised on the brink of an abyss, not even during that vampire war at the turn of the new millennium that had forced her to treat so many knights off the record. Merrit had a sense for such things. All nurses did. Their fingers were on the pulse of more than just their patients. A city was like a person, full of different arteries and nerves and spasms and twitches, and hospitals were where cities showed the first signs of a breakdown.
So Merrit wasn’t entirely surprised when Dianne Brandt came to her, Dianne’s face as bleached of natural color as her hair. Dianne was still a party girl at thirty-four. Merrit had known other nurses who dealt with the death surrounding them by trying to hang on to their youth and experiencing life to the fullest every single moment of their off-hours. It worked for a time, but if the behavior was driven by fear or addiction, it eventually started to go badly. Dianne Brandt, in Merrit’s opinion, was starting to go badly. And Dianne wanted Merrit to come see the patient in 4G, Chasney Shumate. Dianne wouldn’t say why.
Merrit was expecting the worst, but when she got to room 4G, Chasney Shumate wasn’t dead.
