Kate Guillory was having a conversation with herself.

If you hadn’t lied to me, I wouldn’t have to do this.

You can tell it to yourself as many times as you like, won’t ever make it right.

It had been going on for some time, the same two arguments ever since she’d set off. It was worse than a discussion with Evan. She put an end to it now, concentrated on the matter in hand as she opened the door to Otto’s shed, the one he’d never kept locked against all the advice of his security-conscious nosy neighbor, Walt. She slipped inside, tried not to think about Otto tied to the chair that she could make out in the dim light, beaten with a shovel by Elder in search of answers about her own father.

She felt along the ledge above the door for the spare back door key that Otto had kept there for as long as she could remember, smiled to herself as her fingers touched it. Nobody gets less set in their ways as they get older. She got out of the shed with all of its guilt and accusations, darted across the lawn to the back of the house.

On came the security light.

Damn.

That was a new addition. Added some time in the last twenty years since she’d last been here—ignoring her visit a couple days ago. She’d have been better off in the daytime.

Then the sound of nosy Walt’s back door opening, a matching security light illuminating the whole damn street a moment later.

‘Who’s there?’

She moved away from Otto’s back door to where he could see her.

‘Is that you, Walt?’

‘Who’s that?’

She heard the relief in his voice at the sound of a woman, could’ve told him that a woman can squeeze a trigger as easily as a man.

‘It’s Kate Guillory. I came to see Otto a couple days ago.’

He moved to where he could get a good look at her, relaxing further as he recognized her. He looked a little embarrassed at the baseball bat in his hand.

‘Yeah, I remember. You were helping him with the digging.’ He smiled. ‘It’s a bit late to be doing that now.’

She smiled back.

Depends what sort of digging you’re talking about.

‘I visited him in the hospital yesterday. He asked me to grab a few things for him. But I’ve been so busy . . .’

He nodded like he knew how it was.

‘That’s right. You’re a detective, aren’t you? His old partner’s daughter. He’s always talking about you.’

She groaned inside. Why not try to make me feel even worse? He was only saying what he thought she’d want to hear. And now that she’d disturbed him, he was preparing to spend half the night talking. His expression turned grave to prove it.

‘I found him, you know.’

‘Yes, he told me. Lucky you did.’

She listened patiently while Walt took her through it step by step. He didn’t quite start with him getting up that morning and what he’d had for breakfast, but he didn’t leave a lot else out.
