Elizabeth

Iarrived at work at exactly the same time as every day and headed straight to my desk. I was going to act like nothing ever happened. That was the plan, and I was sticking to it.

“Oh, no coffee today?” Alicia walked over and glanced at me. “Something happened.”

“Just tired from working late.” I smiled, doing my best to look natural. “My treat during lunch?”

She hesitated before refusing. “No, the moment passed.”

I nodded. I did think she was warming up to me faster than she did with any other employee. Maybe a little more time spent together, and we’d be friends. I wondered what she’d think if she knew I was fucking the boss. Ugh, calm down Elizabeth. It only happened once. You’ll get over this incident and move on.

My work phone suddenly got a message to meet Ethan in his office. Walking into the scene of the crime haunted me, but this was why I had to be strong. I had to make it as normal as I could and as clear as possible.

“Good morning,” I said as I walked into his office. He was standing in the middle of it with his hands in his pockets, looking at me in annoyance.

“Good morning? It was not a very good morning for me as I was left out cold on a barely cooled bed after giving the best fucking performance of my life. And all you have to say to me is good morning?”

He wasn’t taking this as cool and calm as I thought he would. The tantrum even looked cute. But I knew what had to be done.

“I’m sorry if I offended you in any way, but I thought me leaving would be best considering the situation …”

“What situation?” he asked, revolted. “I barely had the condom off and you flew out the door the moment you heard me get serious.”

I remained calm. “I apologize.”

He grabbed me. “Damn it, Elizabeth. This was not just a one-time thing, and you know it. I know I might not be good with words, but I thought you understood that I want you. I don’t want to keep my hands off you. So don’t shut me out. I only invited you to that birthday party for your own good.”

“I know.”

“So fucking accept it, and let’s move on.”

I took his hands and tugged them down. He released me, confused.

“And come as what, Ethan? Your personal assistant? Your secret lover? Who am I to come as? I’m certainly not invited as Elizabeth Bayfield.” Before I knew it, tears had welled in my eyes. Fuck, I didn’t want to get emotional, but having him hold me brought out a flood in me I didn’t know I had.

Knowing I was hurt, but completely right, he kept quiet.

“So let’s drop the subject and not complicate things. We’re childhood friends, ex enemies, and now coworkers working on an app. That’s it.”

Seeing he was speechless, I assumed he understood and left the office before I broke into tears I didn’t want him to see.
