CHAPTER THIRTEEN

JOE OPENED THE DOOR, slid into his seat and dragged Emily against him again. He didn’t know why he was scraping his mouth against her soft, ripe lips, or running his hands through those wet, silky curls. He simply felt that if he didn’t do these things, if he didn’t do them right now, he would die. A seizure, or spontaneous combustion, or nuclear detonation. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t be pretty.

Her soft whimper brought him to his senses. He didn’t let her go, but he tried to give her a little more room to breathe. She needed to breathe. He didn’t want her to pass out, because then he’d have to wait for her to regain consciousness before he could slip his tongue into her mouth again. And again and again…

The selfishness of that thought finally brought him to a state of full consciousness. Well, relative consciousness, anyway. He wasn’t too sure he would ever regain a state of complete normalcy, at least not while Emily was in the immediate vicinity, looking like, and smelling like, and feeling like she did.

Finally. He knew what she felt like. Tossing rational thought into the air like confetti, he sank into another kiss, just to hold amazing fact, just to feel all those soft curves against him for a little while longer. Or a lot longer. Whichever came last.

He. Knew. What. She. Felt. Like. No. He shoved her away and backed against the car door. “This is insane.”

“This did not happen. I mean, it did happen, but it’s not going to happen again.”

“You’re right.” She bit down on her lower lip. He really wished she would stop doing things that drew his attention to that part of her anatomy. “You’re absolutely right.”

“Are you sure?”

She nodded again, and then shifted to stare out the windshield. “Yes.”

She was agreeing with him. This was worse than he’d expected. “No argument for the sake of argument?”

“No. No arguments. Not even a discussion.” She turned away from him to tug her seat belt across her chest. Right across those dual handfuls of luscious, moldable flesh. “I’m ready to go now.”

He started the car, pulled out of the parking space and headed through the lot. Small, normal, everyday movements. This was good. He could do this. He could handle these little activities, could start with clenching his fingers around the steering wheel and pressing his foot on the accelerator and then move up to more complicated activities like carrying on a coherent conversation while walking. One step at a time. One sentence at a time. Sort of like making this smooth turn around another row of parked cars, with the sound of Emily’s breathing filling his ears, and her perfume tickling his nose and the jean-clad length of her legs in his peripheral vision.

“The hell with this.” He jerked into
