Chapter Fourteen.

We followed Bill after the McDonald's stop. Morgan and I pretty much got a bag of sausage and biscuit breakfast sandwiches and gnawed on them periodically as the hours went by. Our coffees were done far too quickly, and around eleven, we stopped at a gas station and convenience store. The highway waxed and waned from two lanes to six and down again, and led us through more mountains, more woods.

Morgan swiped a credit card and left me to fill the Jeep's gas tank, stretching as she stalked across the parking lot and through the automatic glass doors. Bill parked at the pump opposite mine, and Joe hopped out and followed Morgan into the convenience store, and she turned a little to talk to him as they went through the automatic doors. The thick smell of gasoline coated the inside of my nostrils, and I sneezed three times, quickly.

“Bless you. Making good time,” Bill observed as the gas started running into his tank. “We’re almost there.”

“I guess so,” I said, eyes watering. I constantly tried to gauge how well I 'passed' and where I needed improvement. At least smelling like a wolf wasn't something that I could mess up. I rubbed my nose with my free hand and sniffed. Gasoline and oily asphalt. I pinched the bridge of my nose to head off another sneeze.

“Well that's good.” My pump thunked, startling me. I took the receipt it spit out and shoved it in my pocket. Morgan had taken the keys with her, but it seemed rude to just walk away. “See you inside, I guess.”

“Sure,” he said. “Let me ask you something first, though.”

Already headed, I paused and turned around. “Yes, sir?”

“How was it that you've turned up? None of our intel on the Culvers includes you.” Bill smiled and kind of chewed at a stub of unlit cigar in his mouth. “Just idle curiosity, mind you. It's really none of my concern.”

I smiled sweetly and kept my breathing nice and even. “I guess you just need to work on your intel.” Morgan, bless her, came part way out of the store and waved at me. I guess I was taking too long for her taste. Or maybe they had special edition junk food that she hadn't tried yet.

“What did he want?” she asked me in barely a whisper as soon as I was right next to her.

“He asked where I came from. Said he has 'intel' on us.”

“What'd you say?”

“That I guessed he needed to work on his intel.” Morgan laughed and slugged me in the shoulder.

″You're not that good a liar, but you could be worse. Maybe I should take back the open book thing.”

“Oh Morgan, you do say the sweetest things.” We parted ways to use the restrooms and forage. I didn't have Morgan's apparently insatiable sweet tooth, and I tried to find what could be considered close to real food. The
