She stiffened at the curtness of my reply.
I apologized, but added, “He pissed me off out there. I want this to look so good for tomorrow, and he acts like I’m bitchy and demanding.”
She took my hand and patted it. “It always seemed to me like he thought the world of you.”
“No, there’s nothing there, Anita.”
“Oh well, I’m glad. I was worried that there might be something going on between you two. I mean, I would hope you’d get along in business, but I wouldn’t like to see you get mixed up with a man who’s got a wife and little children. I always say, if you go with a cheater then either you lose, which is what usually happens, or if you win, the grand prize is a cheater.”
I smiled and pretended to agree. “He’s a loser.” All my hopes were crashing down, and I knew I’d be miserable when I had a chance to think about it. I turned my attention to the house and forced myself to talk about throw pillows and fresh flowers.
At about five thirty, I took Anita with me to inspect the work site before I left, and everything looked good. Mike was gone. One kid remained, a teenager that I’d seen before who would clean up, rake, and throw leaves and branches, rocks and trash into the truck bed. Tony was scrupulously polite to both Anita and me, which made me even more annoyed because I thought he was trying to make me out to be a liar. When she said good night, she looked faintly puzzled.
I turned to go, and Tony stopped me with his hand on my arm. To the kid, he called out, “Take your time and finish up. We’re going to get a sandwich.”
The kid nodded and went on raking.
Tony called back to him, “I’ll bring you something.” Then he opened the passenger side door of his truck for me.
The first thing he said as we pulled away was, “Mike is Beryl’s brother.”
