Chapter Nine
Kate took a quick shower, not even waiting for the water to warm despite the chill of early evening. She rubbed herself dry, feeling naked and exposed by the haircut, even though her hair was only four or five inches shorter. This shorter hair revealed more clearly who she really was, and it felt like a shedding of a costume to wear this androgynous hair. Her vulnerability shone from every bare inch of her neck and shoulders, and she shivered more from brittleness than cold.
The makeup kit was too big to fit on the available kitchen counter space, and she opened it on the table. It was, as Sierra had promised, brand new and packed full of every kind of makeup she could possibly need. She was overwhelmed by the choices and put on her outfit to warm up a little. Examining herself in the small mirror above her refrigerator, she decided to keep it simple and follow instructions. She glanced at her new watch, analyzing the possible scenarios she might encounter. What exactly did Sierra want her to do and what exactly was she willing to do in order to further infiltrate this little drug ring? Marcie had been very vague on the details of just how far a female agent might be expected to go to do her job.
âAm I supposed to be willing to sleep with someone?â
Marcie had held up a finger and answered her by reading some random protocols at her and avoiding her gaze, and that had put the kibosh on her questioning as it had been intended to. She was supposed to do whatever it took to get the job done without making any fuss about it. Her personal safety, dignity, and privacy were no longer hers but the negligibly valuable property of the United States government. Uncle Sam was not interested in how she felt about it.
Was she willing to prostitute herself for the sake of the mission? It would be a betrayal not only of her personhood but also specifically of her lesbian identity. Was she really willing to sacrifice so much?
Kate shook her head a decisive no. Just as she did so, she heard a knock at the door and opened it with a forced smile. There stood Stoney, his greasy hair hanging in his face, his boot already stuck in the doorway before she could react.
âWell, well, well. Look at you. My money cleaned you up real good.â His eyes narrowed and he ran his gaze slowly down her figure and back up again, taking his time. âYou look sweet enough to eat, baby girl.â
Kate nodded her thanks, flushing.
âWhatâs the matter, you shy?â
âWhat can I do for you, Stoney?â She forced a sweet smile on her face, recalling her early years in Tennessee, before she knew how to deflect unwanted attention. Stoneyâs piggish grin and hungry eyes served to put her right back in her place as a mere plaything of whatever man wanted to use her, and she did what any good southern woman does when sheâs bristling inside.
