Chapter 21

The plane carrying Delgado landed at a private airstrip ten miles from his compound in the mountains, three hours after takeoff. During the flight, he had received a text message from José Melendez, informing him the plan was on schedule.

Delgado was hesitant at first, using Melendez as a proof-of-life pawn. But Melendez insisted it was the only way the FBI would trust him and play along.

The thought of Melendez betraying him crossed his mind but disappeared just as quickly. José Melendez was as loyal as they came. He was someone Delgado would never let rot in an American prison. Deal or no deal, he would make sure Melendez would be returned to his side, unharmed.

A helicopter was waiting at the airstrip, its rotors spinning, forcing Delgado to hold his hat as he walked beneath. The pilot readied for takeoff by supplying the turbo engine with more power. The rotors’ increased speed created a wash strong enough that forced Delgado to clamp his hat to his head as he climbed into the safety of the cockpit. He put on the headset—designed so the passengers and pilot could communicate over the engines’ roar—and ordered the pilot to head for the compound. The pilot nodded and pulled back on the stick. The engine sputtered for a second, and the machine lifted off the ground. The chopper spun one hundred eighty degrees, and the pilot increased the throttle. The aircraft reached fifteen hundred feet in thirty seconds.

After five more minutes, Delgado saw the clearing in the jungle that outlined his property. He was always impressed while viewing the two-hundred-acre property from the sky. It took millions of dollars and five years to build. Now, someone was trying to take it all away from him. He would never let that happen.

Once on the ground and clear of the humming helicopter, Delgado began calling all his lieutenants. He ordered them to report to the compound within the hour.

Melendez was usually the one who contacted his underlings. He was the go-between for the workers and management. Receiving a call directly from the El Jefe meant there was a serious problem, and blood would likely be spilled.

The moment was not lost on the drug lord. He guessed that the responsible party for his daughter, and the FBI agent’s death, would not show. He would then use his many resources to hunt the guilty party down and make an example of them—a warning to the rest of his people. If you mess with the bull, he’ll torture you and then dismember your corpse before sending the pieces, one by one, to your family for many years, as a constant reminder of their loved one’s treachery.

The terrain had been muddy and almost impassable, even on foot. But Dodge made it to Bogotá in a couple hours. He guessed that the group searching for him must have found the downed plane and assumed both he and the pilot were dead. They would eventually find out he was still alive. But once in the city, he just needed to get to the US Embassy to meet his State Department contact.
